Newly crowned Miss Universe Australia, Caris Tiivel, reveals she overcame DEPRESSION to claim the title

  • Perth 23-year-old Caris Tiivel was crowned Miss Universe Australia 2016

Newly crowned Miss Universe Australia Caris Tiivel has used her role to shine a light on mental health.
The stunning 23-year-old revealed to the Herald Sun she once suffered from depression and anxiety, something she overcame.
'I’m someone that has suffered from anxiety and depression in the past and a lot of people think you are always smiling, you are always happy all the time, there is nothing wrong with you,' she said. 'But that's the stigma that comes with depression.'

Miss Tiivel was crowned Miss Universe Australia 2016 on Wednesday night in Melbourne.
The Perth resident follows in the footsteps of Monika Radulovic, who was crowned in 2015.
This is the second time Miss Tiivel has made a bid for the title, telling Fairfax Media she first tried out in 2013.

Miss Tiivel said many people were not aware that someone might be suffering from a mental health issue.
She plans to show her support by providing assistance to other people going through a tough time.

Miss Tiivel is signed with Chadwick models and has appeared in campaigns for clothing store ae'lkemi, graced the cover of Women's Fitness magazine's August 2016 issue and posed for GQ.
On Thursday she appeared on The Morning Show, where she spoke about her time in the pageant and said she was 'over the moon' about the win.
Miss Tiivel competed in swimwear, evening wear and a Q&A, that saw her answer the question: How do you define success and how does that impact you?

She answered by saying you should set goals, follow your life's passions and strive to be the best you can while being happy within yourself.
Other contestants were asked questions about the sugar tax, marriage equality, women in politics and domestic violence. 
Miss Tiivel told The Morning Show she will prepare for the upcoming Miss Universe pageant by staying up-to-date with current affairs and having an opinion on hot topics.
