MISS AMERICA TO PERFORM NATIONAL ANTHEM AT FOOTBALL GAME THURSDAY
MACON, Ga. – Miss America 2016 Betty Cantrell will be returning to Mercer University this Thursday, Sept. 1, to sing the National Anthem at Mercer football's season opener against No. 15 The Citadel at Five Star Stadium.
Cantrell, who pursued a degree in voice in Mercer's Townsend School of Music before putting her studies on hold to focus on the Miss Georgia and 2016 Miss America Competitions, will perform the National Anthem shortly before the Bears' kick off against The Citadel at 7 p.m.
As Miss America 2016, Cantrell has embarked on a year of service that has taken her on a national tour to educate audiences on her platform – Healthy Children, Strong America – encouraging children to make healthy choices and to stay physically active. She has also continued to entertain the nation with her remarkable vocal performances, as well as serve as the National Goodwill Ambassador for Children's Miracle Network Hospitals.
Cantrell, who has aspirations of a musical theater career on Broadway, was the second Miss Georgia to be crowned Miss America, following Macon resident Neva Jane Langley Fickling in 1953. Mercer's state-of-the art, 200-seat performance center in the University's McCorkle Music Building bears the name of Fickling.
Founded in 1921, the Miss America Organization is one of the nation's leading advocates for women's education and the largest provider of scholarship assistance to young women. Contestants in the annual competition represent all 50 states plus the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.
