Uganda is among the five countries that won a golden medal in the just concluded Miss Earth international pageant.

Miss Earth is a beauty pageant in search of the most beautiful young lady who is very knowledgeable about her environment and who can strongly stand as an ambassador for the protection and preservation of the environment.

Sandra Akello, who represented Uganda for this year's international pageant said her zeal for environmental protection is the reason she won the golden medal.

"It brings me joy and honour to say that my country has been recognized because of its great reach diversity of culture, my costume spoke more about that.

The costume was motivated by eco-tourism and the desire to promote tree planting and cleaning and protection of the environment.

I am glad that I am back with a golden model that I won from the stiff competition of the best national costumes in Africa," she joyfully said.

The Miss Earth International Pageant brings together different competitors from over 100 nations across the world.

On arrival at Entebbe International Airport, Akello appealed to young women to develop ambitions of protecting their environment as part of the strategy for mitigation and adaptation of climate change effects.

Akello was selected to represent Uganda after she emerged best during the Miss Earth Uganda National pageant where she was recognized as Miss Earth Air.

"We want real Earth warriors who will fight for the protection of Uganda's environment from all works of life, "she said.

She applauded her director, Victoria Nabagereka, for being very supportive and mentoring her.

Nabagereka observed that currently, the environment is rapidly undergoing thorough degradation, encroaching on wetlands and forest reserves.

"Through the pageant, we want to set standards for beauties who understand the environment that is why we are looking for girls who can be ambassadors for the nature and culture of Uganda, "she said.

The pageant is making efforts to create awareness about environmental sustainability and focus on activities that highly promote the protection and preservation of the environment such as greening, recycling, tree planting, energy efficiency, ecotourism and carbon conscious life style choices among others.

This is all intended to combat the ill effects of global warming.
