Afrae Bahla Wins ‘Miss Fat Morocco’ Beauty Pageant
Taroudant – Beauty contestant Afrae Bahla won the title of “Miss Ronde Maroc,” (“Miss Fat Morocco”), last week. This pageant is the first of its kind in Morocco, celebrating the beauty of plus-sized women.
Bahla, a university student from Casablanca, was crowned “Miss Fat Morocco” 2016 in a ceremony organized at the Royal Club in Mohamadia near Casablanca, in the presence of ‘Miss Ronde Afrique’, fashion designers and other famous people.
About 13 women across Morocco participated in the contest, which according to the organizers, aims at celebrating plus-sized women and eliminate the negative stereotypes toward them.
Afrae Bahla, the winner of the contest, will participate in the coming “Miss Ronde France” as a jury member.
“I dedicate this title to all plus-sized women of the world,” Bahla said, adding that “my message to all women who felt they are not beautiful because of their plus-size, I say: ‘you are beautiful, sexy and more feminine than others”.After having participated as a jury member in “Miss Ronde France,” Pascale Richard, a fashion designer for plus-sized women and founder of “Miss Fat Morocco”, said, “I liked the idea and decided to organize it in Morocco, where I live most of the time”.
Richard said that it was during her participation in “Miss Fat France” as a designer of formal evening dresses, that she had the idea to create a Moroccan contest for plus-sized women.
Among the criteria from which the contestants were selected are: level of education and intellect, in addition to their physical beauty and Body Mass Index (BMI).
In Morocco, as in many other societies, standards of beauty, whether on an individual or a collective basis, are widely different.
However, it is believed that men, particularly those in the countryside, regard fuller-figured women as more attractive and healthier, than in the Western world where being slender and fit is regarded as the ideal.
