Miss Arkansas' name might be Savvy, but it was her sassy jazz dance routine that made her a winner at Wednesday night's Miss America preliminary competition in Atlantic City.
Savvy Shields, 21, won a $2,000 scholarship for her dynamic dance routine, set to the song "They Just Keep Moving the Line" from the now defunct NBC musical series "Smash."
Shields, who hails from Fayetteville, Ark., is a fine arts major at the University of Arkansas and says her "secret dream" is to become a background dancer for Beyonce.
"I love 'Smash' and it's playing in my car every second I get it," Shields said after the show.
Miss Maryland, Hannah Brewer, won the $1,000 award for Lifestyle and Fitness in Swimsuit after walking the pageant runway in a black bikini with white trim. Brewer, 19, graduated high school when she was 16 — she was homeschooled — and is currently a business administration major at Carroll County Community College.
"I hope I just made a connection with the judges and let them know who I was," Brewer said after the win.
Brewer wants to get her MBA, has a pageant platform that advocates support for veterans and calls one of her all-time dreams is to perform as part of a USO tour.
Miss Alabama, Hayley Barber, was the night's other big winner for snagging the top scholarship in not one but two categories — the S.T.E.M. and Quality of Life community service awards, worth $5,000 and $6,000 respectively. Barber, 22, says she didn't have an eye exam until she was 16 and now wants to be an optometrist. Her pageant platform is Sight for Small Eyes, which works to ensure children have access to vision care.
