If Miss America 2017 were decided solely on helping others, the crown could've gone to Alabama Wednesday evening.
Out of 52 contestants, Hayley Barber, Miss Alabama 2016, was named the winner of Miss America's Jean Bartel Quality of Life Award during the second night of preliminaries in Atlantic City.
The award was named in honor of Jean Bartel, Miss America 1943, and recognizes Miss America contestants who excel in making a significant impact in the lives of others through community service and volunteerism.
Barber's platform "Sight for Small Eyes," encourages eye examinations for young children and raises funds to provide vision therapy for children with low vision through Sight Savers America, a non-profit in Pelham.
"My main goal for Miss Alabama and Miss America is to get legislation passed that would require comprehensive eye examinations before entering school," Barber told AL.com after her arrival in Atlantic City.
She was also recognized as Miss America's National Miracle Maker for raising the most funds for Children's Miracle Network Hospitals which directly helps hospitals like Children's of Alabama. The Miss Alabama Organization was announced as the second runner-up for states raising the most money for CMN. The charity is the official platform of the Miss America Organization.
Barber took a year off of her studies at UAB to fulfill her duties as Miss Alabama. She plans to return to school to study optometry after. Eventually, she wants to open her own private pediatric optometry practice.
Part of her optometry education will be funded by another scholarship she was awarded Wednesday evening. She was named one of three recipients of the Miss America STEM Scholarship Award. The STEM scholarship awards Miss America contestants with a declared field of study in science, technology, engineering, or math. In total, she was awarded $21,000 in scholarships during the preliminary.
Miss Alabamas who also won Miss America's Quality of Life Award include:
- Miss Alabama 2014 Caitlin Brunell
- Miss Alabama 2012 Anna Laura Bryan Strider
- Miss Alabama 2004 and Miss America 2005 Diedre Downs Gunn
- Miss Alabama 2003 Catherine Crosby Long
- Miss Alabama 1996 Alison McCreary
- Miss Alabama 1992 Kim Wimmer
Savvy Shields, Miss Arkansas 2016, won talent and Hannah Brewer, Miss Maryland 2016, won Lifestyle and Fitness in Swimsuit during Wednesday's preliminary.
Preliminary competition, festivities and events culminate with the 2017 Miss America Competition finale, Sunday, September 11, 2016. The finale will broadcast live from Atlantic City's Boardwalk Hall, Sunday, September 11, 2016 from 9:00 – 11:00 p.m. EST on ABC.
