Miss New Jersey parade kicks off pageant in Ocean City (PHOTOS)
OCEAN CITY — It's that time of year again: Miss New Jersey week, and what better way to kick off the pageant than with a parade.
The boardwalk was lined Wednesday night with spectators, family members and friends of the 30 women competing for the crown.
This year's theme was Toys on the Boardwalk, with the women dressing up as their favorite pastime toys.
Some of the costumes included Hello Kitty, worn by Miss Gateway Sandra Hilla; a ballerina in a music box, worn by Miss Salem County Brenda Zeck;Thomas the Tank Engine, worn by Miss Somerset County Kyra Seeley; and Jack-in-the-box, who actually popped out of a box, worn by Miss Coastal Shore Madison Welsh.
Other contestants rolled down the boardwalk doting their favorite games such as Operation, worn by Miss Atlantic County Kennedy Stillman-Fath; Candy Land, worn by Miss Southern Counties Ayla Gentiletti; and Twister, worn by Miss Union County Yulemni Morel.
The Miss New Jersey pageant will take place this week in Ocean City. 30 women are competing for the crown.
The parade also included marching bands, dancers, cheer teams and veterans.
One of the parade goers, Debra Giannini, said she loves to see the different costumes because it shows the girls' imaginations come to life.
Giannini's daughter, Lindsey Giannini of Hammonton, is the reigning Miss New Jersey, who will pass her crown on to one of the 30 women Saturday night.
"I'm excited for the next family to experience what we experienced," Giannini said.
"To watch your daughter experience her year was incredible and heartwarming."
Giannani added that she is always impressed with the costumes in the parade.
"It's fun, and the little kids watching love it," she said. "It makes it fun for everyone."
