Formal competition for the title of Miss Alabama 2016 officially started Tuesday morning.
However, just for fun, Miss Alabama contestants competed for a completely different title Tuesday evening at Dreamland Bar-B-Que.
The 47 contestants gathered at the Birmingham restaurant, a longtime Miss Alabama sponsor, for their annual barbecue meal. The outing provides some levity to competition week for the contestants and is a chance for them to kick back before on-stage preliminary competition begins Wednesday evening.
The 2016 Miss Alabama Pageant takes place June 8-11, 2016 at Samford University's Wright Center. The winner will represent Alabama in the Miss America competition in September.
For those that are good sports, the annual Miss Alabama Dreamland Bar-B-Quecontest gives them a chance for barbecue bragging rights a year.
In years past, contestants competed in a rib-eating contest, but the stakes were raised this year with multiple levels of competition in a barbecue relay.
The relay included two teams making and eating a barbecue sandwich, putting on a bib, folding boxes, spinning on stools and drinking a giant glass of sweet tea.
The meal and contest are part of the many activities contestants participate in during competition week. They spent part of Monday attending the Miss Alabama Golf Tournament, one of the largest scholarship fundraisers for the organization. Later this week they'll visit with sick children at Children's of Alabama, a Children's Miracle Network Hospital. Contestants raise funds in support of network hospitals.
The team consisting of Shiann Harper, Miss Quad Cities; Caroline Elliott, Miss Chattahoochee Valley; Emma Gaddy, Miss Marshall County; Chandler Mordecai, Miss Hamilton; Callie Walker, Miss Hoover; and Cassidy Jacks, Miss Trussville, came in first.
Carson Smith, Miss Covered Bridge; Chandler Shields, Miss Cahaba Valley; KeLeigh Edwards, Miss Phenix City; Melanie Roberts, Miss Gardendale Magnolia Festival; Chelsea Yarber, Miss Jefferson County; and Brooklyn Holt, Miss Smith Station; came in a close second.
On-stage preliminary competition starts Wednesday, June 8 through Friday, June 10, 2016. The finale of the pageant and crowning of the new Miss Alabama takes place Saturday, June 11, 2016. Visit the Miss Alabama website for tickets to the four evenings of competition.
