Local scholarship program well represented at Miss Iowa competition
MUSCATINE, Iowa – Officials of the Miss Muscatine Scholarship Program says it’s the generosity of the Muscatine community that allows it to operate a dual program – Miss Muscatine and Miss Pearl City – and their Outstanding Teen counterparts.
In addition to Miss Muscatine, Kaylee Jones, of Muscatine, the Miss Muscatine Scholarship Program is represented in competition in Davenport this week by:
- Miss Pearl City, Jessica Baker, 23, of Coralville. Jessica, a graduate of Western Illinois University, Macomb, is competing on the platform, “Making Miracles Happen – For the Kids”.
- Miss Muscatine Outstanding Teen, Sophia Aguirre, 17, of North Liberty, a student at Clear Creek Amana High School. Her platform is “Remember Me: Attacking Alzheimer’s Disease.”
- Miss Pearl City Outstanding Teen, Julia Baker, 17, of Coralville, a student at Iowa City West High School. Her platform is “Overcoming Learning Disorders: My Battle with Dyslexia.”
Jessica and Julia are sisters.
This is the 50th year of the Miss Muscatine Scholarship Program.
Because there were a sufficient number of candidates in the Miss Muscatine pageant according to guidelines of the Miss America organization, contestants were limited to those who live, work full-time or attend school full-time in Muscatine County. Miss Pearl City contestants can be from outside Muscatine County.
Kindra Platt, co-executive director of the Miss Muscatine and Muscatine Outstanding Teen programs, said more than $50,000 in scholarship money has been given out through the Miss Muscatine Scholarship Program because of the support of the community.
“It’s been a Muscatine tradition since 1965, and we hope to continue to see the program grow,” she said in an email.
