Barbour County native Peyton Brown represented her hometown and state well Sunday, June 5, during the Miss USA pageant, announcing that she was from “Sweet Home Alabama” during the opening of the pageant that aired on Sunday. Peyton made it into the final five contestants out of the 52 women on stage vying for the Miss USA title in Las Vegas, Nevada. The final five included Miss District of Columbia, Alabama, Georgia, Hawaii and California.
It was only after one of the last question and answer segments that she was eliminated from the running for the coveted crown which went to Miss District of Columbia, Deshauna Barber.
The Lakeside School graduate was labeled as the “girl next door” by her fellow contestants and was voted the fan favorite in the swim suit competition, but for those at home and across the country rooting for her; she was the favorite in everything. Comments on Facebook from those watching the competition showed their support and love for the 22 year-old Alabama University senior. One comment posted read “Everyone who knows you are so proud of who you are and what you have done! We love you so much Pey pey!! You have made Alabama proud!” Those sentiments rang true in every post that showed up with Peyton’s name tagged in it on Facebook Sunday evening, before, during and after the pageant.
Videos showing Peyton in Lakeside’s gymnasium were shown during the pageant as Peyton’s segment aired on what drove her and kept her going even through an injury that would have sidelined most people. She told of how days after tearing her ACL during her high school basketball career, she donned a knee brace and competed in the Miss Teen Alabama USA pageant where she won the title that lead her to capture the Miss Alabama USA title.
Peyton is actively involved with the American Cancer Society, Relay for Life, the Boys and Girls Club of West Alabama, and the Make-A-Wish Foundation. She is also passionate about educating people, especially young women, on the importance of taking care of their skin. Her commitment to this cause comes from losing her father to Melanoma as a child.
Peyton loves being outdoors and enjoys water sports, riding horses, and being active. She still considers herself a bit of a homebody and loves cooking and baking as well as spending time with her family.
After she graduates from college, where she is majoring in Communication Studies, she hopes to obtain her Master’s in Nonprofit Management and one day become a Public Relations manager for a nonprofit organization.
