Pia shines in Ms. U victory walk at homecoming show

Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach finally made her victory walk as Miss Universe 2015 amid cheering Filipinos during her successful homecoming tribute show at the Smart Araneta Coliseum in Cubao, Quezon City Thursday night.
This was the first time in the 64-year history of the Miss Universe contest that a separate victory walk was staged following the gaffe during the coronation night in Las Vegas, Nevada last December 20, 2015.
The victory walk is customary in all beauty pageants. It is done after the winner is crowned during the finals.
“I am very overwhelmed. Maraming salamat po sa inyong suporta,” said Wurtzbach, who won the Miss Universe crown for the Philippines after 42 years.
Eager fans waved Philippine flags as Wurtzbach recreated the Miss Universe pageant winning moment when she walked on stage with the $300,000 crown and dressed in the royal blue Albert Andrada evening gown.
Wurtzbach’s victory walk on coronation night was stalled when pageant host Steve Harvey mistakenly announced Miss Colombia as the winner when in fact it was Miss Philippines. The two beauty queens had accepted Harvey’s apology and have since moved on.
The Filipino-German beauty queen was escorted on stage by 1973 Miss Universe Margie Moran.
Stella Marquez Araneta, chairperson of the Binibining Pilipinas Charities, Inc., handed Wurtzbach a bouquet of flowers.
Likewise gracing the special event were Miss Universe Organization (MUO) President Paula Shugart, MUO Road Manager Esther Swan, past beauty queens, and ABS-CBN stars namely Piolo Pascual, Sam Milby, Xian Lim, Yeng Constantino, Erik Santos and broadcast journalist Dyan Castillejo.
Moran, the country’s second Miss Universe, said that the greatest strength of Wurtzbach is the Filipino people.
“She is very lucky because she has the support of many Filipinos. During my time, there were only three Filipinos watching the Miss Universe contest in Athens, Greece. There were not too many OFWs back then. I think the three Filipinos in the audience were from the Philippine embassy,” Moran recalled.
‘NOTHING PERSONAL’
During the Q&A portion with Boy Abunda on stage, Wurtzbach said that her conversation with President Aquino never got personal.
“President Aquino was very professional. Besides, my mom was there,” she said. “I congratulated him for a successful term.”
But Wurtzbach said Aquino cautioned her to think five times if she really wanted to enter politics.
Aquino and Wurtzbach have been romantically linked in 2015. But she pointed out that she and the President were just friends.
BACK TO THE BIG APPLE
The homecoming tribute show was the final official activity of Wurtzbach in the Philippines before she leaves for New York City on Jan. 31.
Today, Jan. 30, Wurtzbach is expected to attend the wedding of Pauleen Luna and Vic Sotto.
Wurtzbach is expected to return to the country for the grand coronation of 2016 Bb. Pilipinas beauty pageant on April 17.
In February, Wurtzbach will be busy with her hosting gig as special correspondent of the “Inside Edition” for its Super Bowl edition.
