Deeanne Enoch, a 25-year-old law student at the University of Papua New Guinea, was crowned Miss Solomon Islands 2015 and will represent the Melanesian state at the upcoming Miss South Pacific Pageant in Cook Islands next month.
Enoch, from Western and Choiseul Provinces of Solomon Islands, won the prestigious title ahead of her seven female counterparts at the crowning night on November 21.
Enoch was sponsored by local business house, Mokolo Enterprises.
This year’s pageant was appropriately themed ‘Our Women, Our Equal Partners’, advocating for, and supporting women’s empowerment and gender equality.
Solomon Islands Prime Minister, Manasseh Sogavare, was guest of honour at the event and announced his government’s support towards Miss Enoch’s participation in the 2015 Miss South Pacific pageant.
The regional event, he said, gives Solomon Islands the opportunity to promote the nation.
PM Sogavare, in his address, stressed that women must be seen as equal partners in the development of Solomon Islands; adding that women have successfully proven themselves in all areas of society.
PM Sogavare shared his vision to see fair representation of women in the Solomon Islands parliament and said that the Democratic Coalition for Change led government is reviewing the reserve seats for women in parliament proposal.
