MANILA – Hillarie Danielle Parungao believes that her national costume and accompanying dance for Miss World 2015 show Filipinos’ resilience to a global audience.
Parungao and the rest of the Miss World 2015 candidates recently participated in the pageant’s “Dances of the World” segment.
The Filipina beauty opted to dance to “Magtanim ay ‘Di Biro,” a popular folk song that narrates the lives of farmers in the Philippines.
Parungao, who is seen holding a bilao or a winnowing basket in a photo posted on the Facebook page of Miss World Philippines, translated the lyrics for her non-Filipino followers.
“Magtanim ay ‘di biro (Planting rice is not easy). Maghapon nakayuko (One is bent all day long). ‘Di naman makaupo (Can’t sit properly). ‘Di naman makatayo (Can’t stand straight). Baywang ko’y nangangawit (My waist is tired). Braso ko’y namamanhid (My arms are numb). Binti ko’y namimitig (My legs are aching). Sa pagkababad sa tubig (From staying long in the water),” she wrote.

In previous editions of Miss World, top candidates in the “Dances of the World” segment were chosen to perform a 30-second routine each during the pageant’s coronation night.
The Philippines’ first-ever Miss World winner, Megan Young, had a solo dance spot in the pageant in 2013. She performed the singkil, a popular Maranao dance.
Parungao is hoping to replicate the success of Young in this year’s Miss World pageant, which will take place in China on December 19.
