CAROLINE CARTER

DERRY — After competing in last week's Miss America 2016 pageant, Miss New Hampshire Caroline Carter returns home to the Granite state as an award winner.

Performing “I Dreamed a Dream” from the Broadway musical “Les Miserables,” the Dover native received a non-finalist talent award at the VIP Gala following the crowning of Miss America, Savvy Shields, of Arkansas. The award was based on her performance during the preliminary nights of the competition last week in Atlantic City, according to a news release.

For her efforts, she earned a $1,000 scholarship. In all, she returns from Atlantic City with an additional $4,000 in scholarships toward future education plans, said Cindi Conley, public relations chairman for the Miss New Hampshire Scholarship Program Inc.

Carter, who has a background in theater and singing, said Tuesday she was honored to win the award and compete in the national pageant.

“I have made a lot of friends and a lot of connections,” she said. “It’s been amazing for me.”

Diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes six years ago, the 18-year-old had to work around the illness during her preparation for swimsuit, talent, and evening gown events. During the pageant, she wore a glucose monitor.

“Everything I’ve done has been meticulously planned so that it really showed all facets of who I am,” Carter said in a May interview.

Earlier this year after winning Miss New Hampshire, Carter earned a $15,000 scholarship and plans to use that money to help fund her education at the University of New Hampshire.

As she has crisscrossed the Granite State, Carter has used her victory as a platform for raising awareness of diabetes.
