The next Miss Michigan USA will get her crown this weekend at McMorran Theater in Port Huron.
The preliminary presentation show begins at 7:30 p.m. Friday followed by the final show and competition at 5 p.m. Saturday.
Tickets range from $40 to $65.
The organization looks for “confidently beautiful women,” to participate, said Melissa Pitchford, Miss Michigan USA and Miss Michigan Teen USA director.
Participants will compete in three categories: swimsuit judging, evening gown judging and the personal interview.

New this year, the teen participants can opt to wear activewear instead of a swimsuit. Pitchford said the goal with the teen competitors was to promote a healthy lifestyle with more tennis shoes and fewer high heels on stage for that portion of the program.
As for the swimsuit competition for the adults, judges will also be looking for contestants who appear to be active, young women who take care of themselves, Pitchford said.
“A lot of people sometimes think a woman in a swimsuit is derogatory, but we are celebrating women who are healthy and take care of themselves,” Pitchford said. “Sometimes people want to make negative comments about women who participate in pageants, but we judge on the three areas of life women aspire to be great in.”
Pitchford said those areas cover fashion, beauty, intelligence, confidence, and being active and healthy.
While the swimsuit competition is said to judge on healthy lifestyle, the evening gown portion is an opportunity for the young women to express themselves, she said.
“It’s the one opportunity for these women to feel beautiful and select a gown and be seen in the same light as many people that you see in the entertainment industry,” Pitchford said.
The Miss USA pageant was formerly owned by presidential nominee Donald Trump. He sold it in the past year to IMG, an entertainment management company. IMG Models, a division of the company, produces New York Fashion Week and Milan Fashion Week. Because of this, Pitchford said competing in the competition is a great opportunity to network for those who wish to advance in the entertainment and modeling industries.
Pitchford said no longer being owned by Trump is an exciting change, and has offered contestants more opportunities
On Friday, all the contestants participate in all three competition categories. From there, judges narrow is down to the top 15 competitors. On Saturday, the finalists will compete again in the same three categories until judges narrow it down to the top five participants. The top five will answer questions from the judges on stage.
“Traditionally judges like to ask questions that are important for teenagers, that they are faced with in reference to social media and society,” Pitchford said. “And for the Miss competition, they tend to ask about what’s happening in our country and election and how it effects Michigan.”
The winner will go on to compete in the Miss USA competition, and the winner of that will go on to compete in the Miss Universe competition.
Miss Michigan USA offers scholarships to private universities that work with the organization, as well as Baker College and a local cosmetology school. According to the competition’s website, Lindenwood University in Missouri is the partner school that offers partial scholarships to participants.
The pageant is routinely confused with the Miss America competition, which is similar, but also includes a talent portion of the competition and the winner goes home with a scholarship to a college of their choosing.
The Miss Michigan USA pageant will be televised in the spring or summer of 2017, but a date has not yet been determined.
