Miss America pageant takes place in hometown Atlantic City this week on anniversary of first-ever contest winner

There she is... back home again.
The Miss America Pageant returns to Atlantic City this weekend where it originated and crowned its innaugural winner back in 1921.
Over 10,000 people crowded the New Jersey boardwalk to see a lineup of beautiful, talented and charismatic women from all over the country compete for the title.

Margaret Gorman was 16 years old at the time when her photo got scooped into a popularity contest at the Washington Herald. In the contest, Margaret was chosen as the first “Miss Washington, D.C,” which helped her capture the titles “Inter-City Beauty, Amateur” and “The Most Beautiful Bathing Girl in America” before ultimately snagging the iconic name as first-ever Miss America winner.

Gorman continued to compete in the following two annual pageants, where crowds continued to respond positively to her. After marrying husband Vicor Cahill, the mogul distanced herself from the beauy queen label and lifestyle, saying that her husband “hated it” and “she did too.”
This week marks the 96th anniversary of “The Miss America Foundation” that takes place in its hometown Atlantic City and will concude September 11.
In all, 52 contestants will take the stage, with competitors from all 50 states. Preliminary honors have been announced, with talent awards going to Tennessee’s Grace Burgess and Arkansas’ Savannah “Savvy” Shields. Lifestyle and fitness awards were given to Cierra Jackson of District of Columbia, and Hannah Brewer of Maryland.

The pageant, produced by Dick Clark Productions and hosted by Chris Harrison of “The Bachelor”, will be nationally televised this Sunday on ABC, where the final contestant winner will be announced.
Last year’s winner, “Miss America 2016, Betty Cantrell (Miss Georgia 2015), is set to crown her successor the title “Miss America 2017”, concluding the final stage of the ceremony.
Cantrell said in a statement that she is “thrilled to be passing on the crown to one of these amazing young women,” and that she thinks it’s in “very good hands."
