Michigan and Ohio came out on top in the final night of Miss America preliminaries at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City Thursday night.
Arianna Quan, Miss Michigan, went the extra mile by injecting palpable emotion into her piano performance to take home the talent award, which comes with a $2,000 scholarship. Talent accounts for 30 percent of the contestant scores on the pageant's final night — the most of any portion of competition.
Quan, 23, performed Mily Balakirev's transcription of Mikhail Glinka's "L'Alouette (The Lark)" on a night that saw many lively talent routines, including Miss Kentucky's violin rendition of Michael Jackson's "Smooth Criminal." Standing in a league of its own was Miss Puerto Rico's tempestuous monologue that contained references to the snake from the Bible and a presidential candidate. The dramatic presentation planted visions of Donald Trump in the heads of the audience.
"I was really worried," Quan said after her win, alluding to a rough rehearsal earlier today on a new grand piano. But as she wrapped up her performance, her unmistakable smile signaled victory.
The talent winner's pageant platform is called "Being American: Immigration & Citizenship Education." Quan, who as part of her onstage question Tuesday said it has been painful to watch the discourse on immigration in the United States presidential campaign, was born in Beijing and came to the U.S. when she was 6. She's studying automotive design at the College of Creative Studies in Detroit. In the run-up to the pageant, she fended off insults from critics who have called her "ugly" and "fat" on social media.
Miss Ohio, Alice Magoto, emerged as the winner for Lifestyle and Fitness in Swimsuit. Magoto, 18, who wore a a black bikini and will study communications at Chapman University, is the youngest contestant at the pageant (contestants can be as young as 17 and as old as 24 when they enter the pageant).
Magoto's platform, "Beauty Unedited," pushes against the altering of photos and advocates for a positive self-image (proving her point, Magoto's contestant headshot is demonstrably more natural-looking than her counterparts). She receives a $1,000 scholarship for the swimsuit win.
Thursday's preliminary was the last segment of competition before the pageant final on Sunday. At the start of the broadcast, contestants will learn who has made the cut to compete on live TV.
