Victim of domestic abuse speaking out through Miss International Pageant
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Alexa Sewell is a 20-year-old nursing student at Ivy Tech Community college.
A few weeks ago she entered the Miss International Pageant. She’s never stepped onto the pageant stage, but she was selected as Miss Indiana International. She’s now using that notoriety to speak to kids about domestic violence, a subject she knows very well.
The Miss International Pageant is not just about beauty, it aims to encourage women to be good role models and to make a difference in their community. Unlike other pageants, Miss International judges select winners based on their speaking platform. There is no talent portion or bikini section– just a fitness and evening wear portion.
Alexa’s platform is domestic violence and child abuse trauma.
When Alexa was a young girl she was a victim of domestic abuse. Now she goes around to local schools to talk about the issue, reading books about self-esteem and telling students how to get help.
Alexa hopes it could change one life.
“It was tough on me. I still suffer with panic attacks and anxiety, but that’s why I am here to tell these kids how to get through it and how to get help,” said Alexa.
“It’s very important for her to come here and share her story,” said Vision Academy kindergarten teacher Felicia Glinsey-Butler. “Not only for our classroom but for our school as a whole because we may not know that these exact things may be going in their homes and in their community they just don’t know what it’s called.”
Alexa is working right now to raise money to pay for her trip to Jacksonville, Florida for the Miss International Competition. She has a GoFundMe page. You can also vote for her on the Miss International website.
If she gets enough votes she could automatically shoot to the top 11.
