1952:
A new Miss USA will be crowned Sunday night. Jackie Loughery was the world's first Miss USA. The pageant was created when the Miss America pageant objected to the styles offered by a swimwear sponsor; the miffed sponsor started its own pageant and housed it in Long Beach, Calif. It simultaneously created the Miss Universe contest, which began the day after the Miss USA pageant in those early days.

The Miss USA and the Miss Universe pageants have become what could be the most anticipated beauty events of the year. 
The competition started after a Miss America winner refused to pose in swimwear by the sponsor Catalina.

Catalina pulled their sponsorship and created the now-rival competition Miss USA, which saw huge success until the 2015 Trump controversy. 
But alas, the competition must go on. The 2016 pageant will be taking place June 5 in Las Vegas, Nevada. 
The current queen, Olivia Jordan, will be handing off her title to the next deserving beauty, who will join the long list of past winners.
