It’s almost here! The 65th annual Miss USA pageant hits Las Vegas on June 5 and soon we’ll be finding out which lovely lady will go on to represent American in the Miss Universe pageant.
Now that we’ve got our first look at the ladies competing for the coveted Miss USA title, it’s going to be SUCH a hard decision for the judges with so many stunners to choose from. With the contest just around the corner, here are five things to know about the Miss USA pageant.
1. The pageant’s winner will go on to represent the U.S. in the Miss Universe competition.
Winning Miss USA is a stepping stone to the even bigger Miss Universe pageant that featuresbeauties from all over the world. To date, eight Miss USA’s have gone on to win Miss Universe, with the last being Olivia Culpo in 2012.
2. Unlike Miss America, the Miss USA pageant doesn’t have a talent competition.
The women of the Miss USA pageant don’t have to have mad skills at singing, dancing or any other talents. Instead, they’re judged on swimsuit, evening gown and interview competitions.
3. Ladies from Texas have dominated the contest over the years.
Contestants from Texas have produced the most semi-finalists and winners, including five consecutive Miss USA titleholders during the 1980’s. Other successful states include California, New York and Georgia. The least successful states in the competition are women from Delaware, Montana and Wyoming.
4. Donald Trump owned the pageant for almost two decades.
Donald owned both the Miss USA and Miss Universe pageants from 1996-2015 until his presidential run. After making disparaging remarks about illegal immigrants at the start of his campaign, Spanish language network Univision announced it would not air the competitions as a result and the hosts quit in protest, and NBC cut ties with it, causing the 2015 contest to end up online instead of televised. Donald sued Univision for breach of contract but the case was settled in 2016 and he sold off the rights to both pageants.
5. For the first time, the 2016 pageant will feature a 52nd contestant.
While all 50 states and the District of Columbia are represented in the pageant, the 2016 pageant will introduce an extra contestant who was selected from an online competition. The winner was Ashley Miller from Oklahoma City who will compete as Miss 52 USA.
