Miss Michigan in 2000s featured 'Madonna,' courageous performance

NOTE: This is the sixth in a series of stories looking back at the quotes and notes of Miss Michigan title-holders through the years.
MUSKEGON, MI – The year 2000 meant a new millennium for the Miss Michigan Scholarship Pageant.
Here are some of the quotes and notes from the Miss Michigan title-holders of the 2000s:
Miss Michigan 2000 Che'vonne Burton
The 18-year-old from Detroit finished in the Top 10 at Miss America 2001. She performed a vocal medley of "This Can't Be Love" and "Almost Like Being in Love."
Burton was Miss Michigan Teen USA in 1997 and has enjoyed a successful career as an actress and model. She currently hosts webisodes on the lifestyle website psnbtw.com.
Miss Michigan 2001 Stacy Essebaggers
The 21-year-old from Whitehall won the Miss Michigan crown 40 years after Nancy Anne Fleming, also from Muskegon County, won Miss America. Captured the 1996 Showstopper Award at West Michigan Showcase
She won with a disco-clogging routine and spent much of her time educating the state about breast cancer, a passion that springs from her mother, a 13-year cancer survivor.
Miss Michigan in 1990s featured music teacher, stand against tobacco
Here are some of the quotes and notes from Miss Michigan title-holders of the 1990s.
"She's such a beautiful woman," she said of her mother. "I don't know what I would do without her."
Essebaggers made many fans at Miss America 2002 after she severely injured her foot during a rehearsal for her clogging routine, but performed anyway.
Miss Michigan 2002 Erin Moss
The 21-year-old from Stevensville won the preliminary talent competition for her flute solo to "Riverdance." She became the second-straight Miss Michigan to finish in the Top 10 at Miss America.
She pointed to President George W. Bush as a leadership role model,
"Most people think they will learn leadership when they become a leader, but it needs to be done before they have a title or position," she said. "Leadership is a lifestyle. It has to be internal before you can help anyone else."
Miss Michigan 2003 Madonna K. Edmond
The 22-year-old from Livonia performed an electrifying jazz dance to "The Heat is On, " which won her the competition's first preliminary talent award. It was the third year in a row she had won a preliminary talent award.
When asked about the world's most-famous "Madonna," she said she admires the talents of the one-and-only Material Girl – but didn't want to be compared to her.

Here is a look at the quotes and notes from Miss Michigan title-holders of the 1980s:
"She's a genius within musical realms," Emond said of her fellow Eastern Michigan namesake, but she wasn't always so happy to share her name with an internationally famous star.
"It was something of an embarrassment when I was little," she said. "I couldn't sing and I didn't want to be given attention because of that."
Miss Michigan 2004 Kelli Talicska
The 24-year-old from Auburn won with a commanding performance of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow."
She was crowned Miss Kalamazoo County by her sister, Kristi, who held the title the year before. Togther, the siblings had sung at the opening and closing ceremonies for Michigan Special Olympics for several years.  
Miss Michigan 2005 Octavia Reese
The 23-year-old from Detroit performed her own cello arrangement of "Barber of Seville."
"Honestly, it is a dream," she said as the stage spotlights made her black velvet evening gown with rhinestone accents sparkle. "The sweetest dream that I always looked at from afar. This is."
A random compliment by a Borders Bookstore clerk during high school led Reese to contemplate beauty pageants.
"He said, 'You are gorgeous, like Miss America gorgeous,'" Reese said. She is allergic to bumblebees.
Miss Michigan 2006 Angela Corsi
The 24-year-old from Farmington Hills won the title in her fifth attempt. She finished first runner-up the two years prior to winning. Her talent was a contemporary jazz-ballet dance to "Sway," an adaptation of the Dean Martin classic which she took from the movie "Shall We Dance?"

Corsi was in Los Angeles in September 2006 to participate in the making of "Finding Miss America," a documentary covering the Miss America Pageant preliminaries which aired on the CMT Network.
Miss Michigan 2007 Kirsten Haglund
The 19-year-old from Farmington Hills went on to become Miss America 2008. She is the granddaughter of Miss Detroit 1944.
Haglund was the youngest girl competing and the youngest Miss America winner since Kimberly Clarice Aiken took the title in 1993.
Her platform was eating disorder awareness, something she suffered from as early as age 12. As a ballet dancer.
Haglund said she felt the pressure to be thin and it spiraled into anorexia. She had been in recovery for more than two years at the time of her crowning thanks to her parents' concern, caring doctors and some serious soul-searching, Muskegon Chronicle reports said.
Facing the illness forced her to evaluate her worth beyond body image – and she used her platform as Miss America to help spread that message.
"You have to figure out who you are and be strong in that," she said. "It's not about food. It's not about appearance. It's about who you are on the inside."
Miss Michigan 2008 Ashlee Baracy
The 23-year-old from Westland performed a lyrical dance to "I Run For Life" as her talent.
Her mother, Janet, was diagnosed with breast cancer five years ago and is a survivor. That inspired her platform, Breast Cancer Awareness and Education. Baracy also established a support network for daughters supporting mothers with breast cancer and hopes to make strides in advocacy, education and fundraising resources during her reign.
"That's what this program gives you, an outlet," she said.
Baracy has served as emcee of the Miss Michigan Scholarship Pageant in recent years. .
Miss Michigan 2009 Nicole Blaszczyk
The 22-year-old from Novi 22 won a preliminary talent award for her lyrical dance. Her win meant Wayne County produced back-to-back Miss Michigan winners.
A dancer since she was 3 years old, she went to her principal and school district in high school and advocated for Novi High School to offer dance as part of the curriculum.
The school began a program the year after she graduated and she helped interview teachers for the position, her mother said in a Muskegon Chronicle article published in 2009.
