STRATHAM — Miss New Hampshire USA is taking off for Las Vegas Wednesday, and will spend the next two weeks preparing for the Miss USA competition.

Sarah Mousseau, 26, of Stratham, was crowned Miss New Hampshire USA at the Radisson Hotel in Manchester on Oct. 30. Mousseau said Monday she began competing in pageants the summer before her freshman year of college, and was “instantly hooked.”

“Competing has allowed me to become the best possible version of myself while meeting some of my absolute closest friends along the way,” Mousseau said.

If she wins Miss USA, Mousseau says she will use the title to break through boundaries and prove that the women who compete in pageants are women of substance.

Mousseau earned a master’s degree in speech language pathology at Brown University, and works for a private practice in Maine that provides services to patients at Frisbie Memorial Hospital in Rochester.

“Miss USA is a woman who is educated, who leads by example, who is strong-willed and passionate while being kind, personable, and most importantly, approachable,” Mousseau said. If she wins, Mousseau will inherit a large platform to become a champion for the charitable organizations she believes in, such as Operation Smile and the Brain Injury Association of America.

The winner of Miss USA immediately relocates to New York City, where she prepares for the Miss Universe Competition and plans how to achieve her goals on the national and global scale with a team of professionals. She is expected to be an ambassador for the organization and receives a cash allowance and access to modeling opportunities.

According to historical records, the first Miss USA and Miss Universe pageants were held concurrently in Long Beach, Calif., in 1952. There were only 30 delegates in the first year of competition, which was conceived in 1950 when the winner of the rival Miss America pageant refused to pose in a swimsuit for publicity photos.

Mousseau will be competing in swimsuit, evening gown and interview rounds against women from all 50 states and the District of Columbia for the title of Miss USA. Between 80 and 100 countries now send a representative to the Miss Universe Competition, which is typically held in December.

The final show for Miss USA airs live on Fox May 14.
