In
a press release on Saturday, the current director of the Miss Universe
Belize pageant announced that she will be leaving the pageant. The Press Release
On
Saturday, Opal Enriquez, the director of Miss Universe Belize announced
that she will officially resign her role as director to pursue personal
goals. Enriquez has only held the Miss Universe Belize franchise since
2016. As a result, there will be no 2017 Miss Belize pageant. (Read: 5 Stunning Evening Gowns Worn by Miss Universe 2016 Contestants)
The
current titleholder of Miss Belize 2016, Rebecca Rath, will pass along
her duties as the reigning titleholder to her 1st Runner-up, Marcia
Moody. Moody will represent Belize at the Miss International pageant
this year and likely at the Miss Universe 2017 pageant as well. Photo Source: Miss Universe OrganizationThere
is no plan for another director to take over the pageant and continue
it. In the beginning of the Miss Belize pageant, there was one central
pageant with its winner going on to compete at Miss Universe. Its winner
or runners up would then go on to compete at Miss World, Miss
International or Miss Earth. (Read: Miss World 2017 To Be Held In China) Additional Controversy
One
point that was not mentioned in the press release was details of Rath’s
passing on her title. Some of her supporters have labeled this press
release an unofficial “dethroning” of Rath. This is particularly
controversial as Rath’s father just revealed a detailed journey to Miss
Universe. (Read: Will Miss Universe Return to the Philippines?)
In
the story, Rath’s father accused Enriquez of sabotaging Rath’s success
at Miss Universe. Tony Rath called Enriquez narcissistic and alleged
that she intentionally used her power as a director to sabotage certain,
less-experienced competitors. He cited issues with the photographer,
staging company and show entertainment and alleged that these problems
all stemmed from Enriquez. Photo Source: Miss Universe OrganizationWith
the press release being so silent on Rath and her reign, many are
questioning if this is punishment for Tony Rath’s published story.
Others are saying that as a queen, she should understand that her duties
simply end with the crowning of her successor, Moody.
What do you think? Is this punishment or just how pageants work? Let us know below!
