Miss Oklahoma's Outstanding Teen, Nicole Jia, was crowned Miss America's Outstanding Teen 2017 at an event at the Rosen Centre Saturday night.
Jia, 17, played a classical piano piece as her talent, while wearing a red pantsuit with a dramatic cape. Her platform is to inspire others daily.
Jia lives with her family in Oklahoma City. Her parents are both doctors.
She won $30,000 in scholarship funds. She was crowned by last year's winner, Allie Nault, who was from New Hampshire.
Jia wore a regal purple dress with a bejeweled bodice and a flowing skirt during the evening gown and interview portion of the competition.
The first runner-up was Miss North Carolina's Outstanding Teen, Catherine White.
An error in scoring lead to a temporary reversal in fortune for Miss Florida's Outstanding Teen, Anjelica Jones, who went from being a top 11 finisher to being allowed to compete with the top eight teens in the talent competition, where she performed a contemporary routine to a Prince medley. She later was voted into the top five.
Jones was crowned Miss Orlando's Outstanding Teen in early July at the state pageant in Lakeland but lives in Jacksonville Beach, where she attends the Douglas Anderson School of the Arts.
In the evening gown portion of the pageant, Jones wore an ivory gown with a beaded bodice and flowing skirt. During her on-stage question, she told judges that love meant "being able to be yourself around someone."
The dancer said her favorite quote was to "Grand jeté every day" because she wanted to "encourage everyone to take a giant leap in life every day" and be the best person they could be. She ended up finishing the night as third runner up, and took home a $5,000 scholarship.
The pageant is open to girls 13 to 17. Saturday's pageant was hosted by Miss America Betty Cantrell and radio host Clint Robinson.
The Miss America's Outstanding Teen program promotes academics, creativity, health and community involvement for teen girls.
