Incumbent Miss Vietnam to miss finale of 2016 pageant after smoking scandal
The upcoming finale of the 2016 Miss Vietnam pageant will be attended by all but the incumbent beauty queen, who has been disciplined for a recent scandal in which she was seen smoking in the public.
Nguyen Cao Ky Duyen, who was crowned Miss Vietnam in 2014, will not be able to pass the crown to the new beauty queen in the finale in Ho Chi Minh City on August 28, the biennial contest’s organizer said Friday.
Duyen has been reprimanded for behaving in a way that “negatively influenced the images of Miss Vietnam and the pageant,” the organizers said in statement.
According to the penalty decision, the pageant will no longer use image of the incumbent Miss Vietnam for promoting and allow her to attend further events in this year contest.
Last month, a video capturing Miss Vietnam 2014 smoking in a café went viral online, causing a wave of fierce criticism from the public, who said Duyen ruined the image of the crown she was wearing.
The man who filmed the video was cited by several local newswires as condemning the 20-year-old woman for smoking in an air-conditioned room with a pregnant woman sitting nearby.
After the video went viral, Duyen took responsibility and delivered an apology on her Facebook page to people for “hearing, reading ugly news about [me]”.
“I was not careful in expressing my personality and have spoiled myself with those controversial acts,” she wrote.
“I was not careful in expressing my personality and have spoiled myself with those controversial acts,” she wrote.
The incident has divided local netizens into two forces; those criticizing that the apology was simply an excuse and Duyen did not really admit her mistake, whereas others showed support to the young girl and said “beauty queens are just normal people.”
Moreover, Duyen even added more fuel to the fire later, with a fresh scandal in which she was seen getting drunk at a night club.
The contest’s organizer eventually had to set up a committee to investigate those scandals.
The final decision is that Miss Vietnam 2014 Nguyen Cao Ky Duyen’s smoking at public place and gathering with friends at inappropriate place are inconsistent with the title of Miss Vietnam.
Besides being banned from appearing in this year’s pageant, Duyen is also required to rectify her behavior, lifestyle as well as improve her image to the public.
This is not the first time Duyen has got involved in scandal after her victory at the 2014 Miss Vietnam pageant.
Not only receiving complaint on her beauty, but Duyen has also a subject for scandalous incidents like cheating at school and the pageant where she won, wearing inappropriate costumes, and havingher photos used on porn video covers and posters of a male clinic in Japan.
To protect her reputation, Duyen and her team have had to invite a lawyer for legal assistance.
According to lawyer Nguyen Thanh Cong, Duyen’s smoking could be inappropriate with her title, but it is not illegal and the man who secretly filmed her probably violated her personal rights.
Last month, layer Cong said he has also been collecting evidences of slander and insult targeting Miss Vietnam 2014 on social networks and newswires for administrative or criminal sanctions.

Stricter regulation
Speaking to Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper, Miss Vietnam’s organizer said it will add more regulations for the contest.
The adjustment will target penalty on violators.
However, according to Associate Prof. Vu Hao Quang, former Deputy Director of Vietnam Central Commission for Propaganda and Education’s institute of public opinion research, it’s hard for regulating how a beauty queen to keep her image in public.
“Each beauty queen has to be responsible for her image with the country,” he said, explaining there is no specific regulation on culture, and traditional ethic.
He said if there are standards for beauty queens’ behavior in society, they should be issued before the contest taking place.
If winners violate those standards, organizers have the rights to dethrone them.
Besides, Quang said there should also be regulation on winners’ responsibility of contributing to the society.
