Rachel Peters on pageant Q&As: Substance matters more than language
The country's representative to the Miss Universe pageant this year is Filipino-British beauty queen Rachel Peters, whose communications skills in English might come in handy in the stressful Question and Answer portion.
In an interview with GMA News' News To Go on Wednesday, hosts Kara David and Howie Severino noted that her fluency in both Filipino and English is an advantage, but asked her nonetheless if beauty queens should be free to use a language they're more comfortable in.
Peters was quick to respond that she believes using a Philippine language like Tagalog should be a non-issue and added that it's a part of our culture that we should feel honored to share.
However, she ultimately pointed out that substance matters more and speaking from the heart is what counts.
"I see absolutely nothing wrong with answering in Tagalog, kasi it's our language. We should be proud of that. We should want to show the rest of the world our language and our culture," Peters declared.
She added, "English or Tagalog, it doesn't really matter. You should be proud of your answer if you answer with conviction. That's really the whole point."
The country's representative for the 65th Miss Universe pageant Maxine Medina received harsh criticism for her decision to answer in English despite the availability of a translator.
Medina post-pageant said that she believes she answered her question the best she could and felt happy with her placement in the Top 6. — Aya Tantiangco/BM, GMA News
