Nulkaba woman Alecia McCallum qualifies for Miss Universe Australia final

Alecia McCallum is hoping to follow in the footsteps of Hunter models Tegan Martin and Jennifer Hawkins at the Miss Universe Australia competition.
The 20-year-old from Nulkaba is one of five women chosen to represent NSW at the pageant’s national final in Melbourne in June.
It is the third year in a row the University of Newcastle student has entered the competition, having also made the national final in 2015.
Alecia is no stranger to success on the catwalk, having made the state and national finals of many competitions since her first pageant – the Miss World Australia quest – in 2013.
The former St Mary’s student was also the runner-up at the Miss Cessnock City quest that year (aged just 17), and went on to be crowned Miss Tourism World Australia in 2015.
The Miss Universe Australia NSW state final was held  on April 30 at the Manly Pavilion, where 25 entrants paraded in swimwear and evening wear before taking part in a question-and-answer.
Alecia was asked what she would do to make a difference if she was crowned Miss Universe Australia.
The University of Newcastle primary teaching student said she would she would use her platform to help children.
“Making a difference in the lives of children is what I’m passionate about and focused on,” Alecia said.
The pageant’s charity partner is also aligned with her values – each finalist has the opportunity to be an ambassador for Toy Box International, which aids Australian charities that support sick and disadvantaged children.
Alecia will be raising funds for Ronald McDonald House via her Everyday Hero page.
Along with the charity element of the pageant, Alecia enjoys the experience of being on stage and the sisterhood that is shared with the other entrants.
“It is a competition, but everyone is so lovely,” she said.
“We all have something in common, everyone is there to support one another.”
The finalists will head off to a week-long ‘boot camp’ in Bali on May 16.
The Miss Universe Australia national final will be held at the Sofitel Melbourne on Collins from June 23 to 30.
Alecia said if she doesn’t take home the crown this year, she would consider entering again.
“It’s always been a goal of mine to potentially win Miss Universe Australia,” she said.
The Hunter Region has a good record in the pageant, with previous winners Martin (2014) and Hawkins (2004) both hailing from Newcastle (and the latter going on to win the international crown).
The host country and date for the international final is yet to be announced, but Melbourne has lodged a bid to bring the event Down Under.
The Miss Universe final is one of the world’s most-watched television events, with more than one billion viewers.
