Meet Miss Louisiana USA 2017

Bethany Trahan is Miss Louisiana USA 2017, which means she'll compete for the Miss USA crown Sunday (May 14) during a live telecast on Fox at 7 p.m. 

If Trahan wins, she'll reign as Miss USA for one year and she'll get to compete for the Miss Universe crown. Read on to learn more about her.

She's from Lake Charles

Trahan is 21 years old, according to her official Miss Louisiana USA biography, and she's the daughter of Lake Charles residents Eric and Michele Trahan. She's planning to graduate from McNeese State University, where she'd be the first in her family to get a college degree, according to her biography. Trahan is studying public relations. 

How she got into pageants

After Trahan saw the Miss USA pageant in Baton Rouge when it was held there either in 2014 or 2015, she'd just been diagnosed with anxiety and depression. But watching the pageant got her inspired.

"I saw how those women carried themselves and I saw how confident they were, and I knew that was something I needed to have," she said in an introductory video for Miss USA. "I knew I wanted to be confident, and competing in pageants gave me that confidence I always dreamed of having."

 

Her platform

In competing at Miss USA and in her role as Miss Louisiana USA, Trahan hopes to bring attention to those suffering from mental illness by working with the National Alliance on Mental Illness.

In her free time

In her spare time, Trahan likes to travel and ride in her dad's helicopter, for which she hopes to earn her pilot's license.
