The Binibining Pilipinas pageant once again proved itself among the most important beauty competitions in the country. Last Sunday, people watched every exciting minute of the star-studded extravaganza either on TV or inside the jam-packed Araneta Coliseum. The days that followed hardly dissipated the buzz around the event.

The Bb. Pilipinas-Universe crown went to Rachel Peters of Camarines Sur who impressed everyone with her wit. Recall that when she was asked for a hypothetical message for this year’s ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) delegates, she said, “I believe that one of our biggest problems our country faces today is divisiveness – in politics, in religion, and also in culture. And I believe that is something that is the same across the world. That is something that I want to address. I believe if people could learn to tolerate each other’s differences and respect each other’s opinions then we will be a stronger nation and world.” That’s our winner right there (put proud smiley here).
Rachel also won Miss Photogenic and Best in Swimsuit.
Here are some interesting facts about our newly-crowned Miss Philippines-Universe.
Supportive family
The 25-year-old was born to a British father and a Bicolana Mother.
In a previous interview, the beauty queen shared her family serves as her “backbone.”
“There are times na I feel tired but my family is always there, advising me and telling me to continue. They keep on pushing me and that keeps me going,” she said.
Intelligent woman
No wonder Rachel gave a compelling answer in the Q&A portion of the pageant. She is well-educated, after all, having finished her International Baccalaureate at the British School in Phuket, Thailand. In addition, she has earned a Bachelor’s degree in Business, Tourism and Events from La Trobe University in Australia.
Business-minded
Rachel is stage manager of the family-owned company, Midas Productions. She has overseen concerts for Katy Perry, Christina Aguilera, and The Moffats, among others. She also owns a coffee shop in Surigao.
Animal lover
Stalk her Instagram and you’d see solid proof of her love for dogs. If she’s not posting photos of herself with pet dogs Ronda and Kobe, she’s around exotic animals like horses, birds, and even baby tigers.
No newbie
Although this is the first time she joined Bb. Pilipinas, Rachel is no stranger to beauty pageants, having placed 4th at Miss World 2014.
Joining Miss World is really a life-changing event for her.
“It really tested me physically, emotional and mentally,” she said. “But when I came out at the end of the pageant, I felt like I’m a different woman now, a better, bigger version of what I am before.”
The constant encouragement of fans prompted her to join Bb. Pilipinas.
Hostess with the mostest
Part of her work in their family’s company is hosting events. She is open to the possibility of joining showbiz.
“I’ve done some acting workshops naman na,” she said.
She would like to work with her supposed “lookalike” Solenn Heussaff.
Celebrity friends
She is friends with actors Sam Pinto, Gwen Zamora, Yassi Pressman, Dani Barretto and Boy2 Quizon.
In love
She is in a relationship with Camarines Sur Governor Miguel “Migz” Villafuerte (uh-oh, sorry boys).
In an exclusive interview with Manila Bulletin’s Robert Requintina, Migz revealed he and Rachel have been in a relationship for three years now.
“Bago pa s’ya maging beauty queen were boyfriend-girlfriend na,” said the 28-year-old politician.
So how will they celebrate Rachel’s Bb. Pilipinas victory?
“I plan on asking her and following her because right now this is her moment. Whatever ways she wants to celebrate it, I will follow just like a servant-boyfriend,” he said.
Nonetheless, Migz hopes Rachel will be able to win the crown as the next Miss Universe.
“I think she’s the total package – beauty, brains, the body. Sa tingin ko sa tulong ng buong Pilipinas, ang Miss Universe kaya natin yan,” was how he put it.
Volunteerism
Though she is not working with a specific organization as of this writing, Rachel often spends time volunteering in a certain orphanage in Camarines Sur. She also advocates women empowerment.
Take it from a winner
Rachel advises every aspirant beauty queen to continue pursuing her dream.
“My advice to them is really to work hard,” she said. “They should take advice from the people around them because they could really help. And of course, they should always stay true to who they are.”
