Binibining Pilipinas 2017 queens on empowering women and other advocacies
Heavy is the head that wears the crown because it's not just about looking good — a beauty queen is also a beacon for positive changes in the world. The Binibining Pilipinas 2017 queens take this task very seriously and each of them have very strong convictions about certain issues.
The queens revealed their personal advocacies on Thursday in an interview with News to Go.
Rachel Peters, who will be representing the country in Miss Universe, said that her goal is to encourage people to celebrate their individuality.
"We live in a time where people feel much pressure to be a certain way or look a certain way, and I want to be the voice that reminds them that beauty comes from within and so be yourself, celebrate your individuality, and watch the power in you emerge," she explained.
The country's representative to the Miss International pageant Mariel de Leon said she wants to champion traditional and classical forms of arts, music, and culture.
De Leon said, "I feel like nowadays that type of art is dying, it's more mainstream and pop right now. I want to bring it back, especially for the younger generation."
Binibining Pilipinas Supranational 2017 Chanel Olive Thomas, whose dream is to be a motivational speaker, said she intends to use her crown to inspire young girls and women to keep pursuing their dreams.
"I love to empower and inspire young girls and women, specifically about self-worth," she said. "When you have a dream, always pursue it. Don't base your worth on what people say about you. You are worthy of pursuing your dreams."
Binibining Pilipinas Intercontinental 2017 Katarina Rodriguez, on a more serious note, said she is drawing motivation from documentaries that depict the harrowing experience of victims of human trafficking.
"One thing that really hit me was human trafficking, especially [between] Southeast Asia and the Middle East," Rodriguez said.
She added, "They get the girls, take their passports, and do whatever with them. It's terrible, it's really terrible... a nightmare, I presume. I want to look more into that and work with that and use the Intercontinental platform to pursue trying to stop it as best we can."
Binibining Pilipinas Grand International 2017 Elizabeth Clenci on a similar note wants to raise awareness about and stop Violence Against Women, explaining that gender equality should start at home.
For her part, Binibining Pilipinas Globe 2017 Nelda Ibe wants to continue her advocacy of building homes for homeless youth.
"Before, I [worked with] an organization that built shelter homes for street children. Now that I have the crown and the voice, I would like to influence the government and the private sector to help me [with] this project," she said. —Aya Tantiangco/ALG, GMA News
