Report: Some Chinese citizens criticize appearance of Asian-American Miss Michigan
MUSKEGON, MI – Arianna Quan is the only Asian-American woman to ever represent the state as Miss Michigan.
She's one of the only Asian-Americans competing for the title of Miss America in September. She loves archery, she speaks two languages and studies Transportation Design at Detroit's College for Creative Studies.
She impressed the judges at the Miss Michigan with her poise onstage and her exceptional talent for playing the classical piano. A native of Beijing, China where she lived for the first six years of her life, the well-spoken Quan figures to be an excellent choice to represent Michigan at the national pageant.
But some people in her native China don't seem to agree. Shanghailist.com, a lifestyle blog chronicling the happenings in the country's most-populous city, recently published an article titled "Chinese-American woman crowned Miss Michigan, netizens think she's ugly."
The article references several negative comments from online users, many of which who commented on her appearance.
A resident of Bloomfield Hills, Quan beat out 32 other women from around the state to earn the title of Miss Michigan inside the Frauenthal Center for the Performing Arts in downtown Muskegon on June 19.
As Miss Michigan, Quan advocates for her platform, "Being American: Immigration & Citizenship Education."
