Oh, no it’s Harvey! Miss U pageant in PH gives Steve a second chance
There’s always a room for second chances.
And for Steve Harvey, whose hosting boo-boo at last year’s Miss Universe pageant earned him jeers in cyberspace, that chance to redeem himself will be in the Philippines, home of the victim of his anticlimactic error Pia Wurtzchbach.
Department of Tourism (DOT) officials confirmed the country’s hosting of the Miss Universe pageant in January, 2017, and then said that Harvey – who read the wrong name on the cue card when announcing the winner of last year’s pageant – will return as its host.
In an interview with radio station DZMM, Tourism Undersecretary Kat de Castro said Harvey told the Miss Universe organization that he wants to personally apologize to Filipinos after he mistakenly named Miss Colombia Ariadna Gutierrez as the new Miss Universe, when the title was supposed to go to Miss Philippines Pia Wurtzbach.
He already asked for forgiveness from both beauty queens, who competed last December.
“He wants to apologize to the Filipinos who were hurt because of what happened,” De Castro said.
The DOT official added that even President Duterte was surprised to learn that Harvey will be returning as the pageant’s host.
“Nagulat din siya. Sabi niya, ‘Bakit?’ Dagdag pa niya, ‘He is a disaster.’ Ginanun ako ni Presidente. Eh sabi ko, ‘Sir, mukhang iyon na po talaga ang naging desisyon ng mga taga-Miss Universe.’ Tumawa na lang siya (The President was surprised and asked, ‘Why him? He’s a disaster.’ I told him, ‘Sir it seems to be the final decision of the Miss Universe franchise.’ He just laughed),” De Castro said.
MISS U IN PH
“I would like to inform everybody that the Miss Universe pageant will be on January 30, 2017 in the Philippines,” Tourism Secretary Wanda Corazon Teo said in a press conference on Thursday.
The announcement came as a surprise as Duterte has already said that he would not spend government funds on the hosting of the Miss Universe pageant.
During the press conference, however, Teo disclosed that the funding would come from the private sector.
“The government is not going to spend any single centavo. It will be the private sector who would shoulder the expenses,” Teo stated.
It was revealed that the budget for the pageant is estimated to be at $11 million.
Teo believes that the hosting of the pageant will be a big boost for the country’s tourism industry.
“Once Pia announces that Miss Universe is going to happen here, people abroad will start looking at the map and see where the Philippines is. And, we’re saying, we’d love to have you in Philippines,” she said.
