Miss USA is rooting the most for one athlete at the Olympics

Miss USA is ready to cheer on Team USA.
“I can’t wait for USA to take home the gold,” says Deshauna Barber, who moved to New York City after taking the pageant title in June.
“Being in the military has given me a lot of stamina.”

Some of the beauty queen’s favorite spectator sports are track and field, but she’s fanatical about gymnastics.
“I love the beam, the vault, the floor routines,” she said.
She’ll be rooting the loudest for gymnast Gabby Douglas, who’s looking to defend her 2012 gold medals.
“I’ve been following [Douglas] for a long time. She’s so inspiring,” says the 26-year-old beauty.

Barber is pretty inspiring herself. A logistics commander in the United States Army Reserve, she’s the first active reservist to wear the crown. And that’s been surprisingly good training for the pageant world.
“When we were preparing for the Miss USA pageant, we had really early mornings and really late nights, so you have to have discipline, otherwise you’ll be exhausted,” says Barber, formerly an IT analyst for the US Department of Commerce. “The other girls struggled with waking up at 4 a.m. In the Army Reserve, we have to get up early anyway! Being in the military has given me a lot of stamina.”
It’s also deepened her sense of patriotism, instilled in Barber by her father, a now-retired Army Master Sergeant.
“The love that I have for this country really runs deep,” she adds. “I recognize the sacrifices that soldiers and their families make because I’ve been through those sacrifices as well, and to wear this sash that says ‘Miss USA’ is so empowering.”
She’ll likely watch the Olympics with her new roommates, Miss Universe Pia Wurtzbach and outgoing Miss Teen USA Katherine Haik at their Midtown apartment.
“New York is so fun!” says Barber, who was born in Georgia, moved all over the country as a child, and represented Washington, DC, in the pageant. “I can see Central Park from my room. Katherine and I went to Central Park the other day and got ice cream and a hot dog. People were probably judging us [for eating it], but we felt like real New Yorkers,”
