MANILA, Philippines  — The Department of Tourism has assured the public that the Miss Universe pageant will not bring the traffic pandemonium that the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) meetings did last year, state news reported.
Last month, DOT announced that Miss Universe grand coronation night will be held in the Philippines early next year.
On Monday, the Philippine Host Committee (PHC) held their first meeting for the upcoming pageant. During the meeting, the multi-agency panel discussed how they are going to maintain safety during the event as well as possible ways they can avoid making Metro Manila's gridlock traffic worse.
"The maddening traffic mess is obviously the one single problem that besets our daily economic activities in Metro Manila, and we will find ways so as not to aggravate this with the hosting of Miss Universe," Teo said.
Previous reports said the pageant, which is expected to draw thousands of tourists to the Philippines, will feature two destinations each from the three main geographical divisions of the Philippines. The strategy will be used to avoid road clogging.

Aside from discussing ways to ease congestion, the panel also discussed how they will safely facilitate the arrival and admission of Miss Universe participants from over 90 countries and how they can coordinate smoothly with the private sector.
Earlier this month, Presidential Spokesperson Ernesto Abella said the Philippine government will not spend a cent to fund the Miss Universe pageant, rather, the private sector will shoulder all costs.
