Elena LaQuatra was crowned Miss Pennsylvania USA 2016 on Sunday, according to the pageant's website. She was also named Miss Photogenic during the competition. She will represent Pennsylvania at next year's Miss USA Pageant. Miss USA is part of the Miss Universe Organization. The winner of the Miss USA competition goes on to represent the United States at the Miss Universe Pageant later in 2016.
Others placing well at the pageant were Cassandra Angst, first runner-up; Krystal Gregorio, second runner-up; Antonia Gore, third runner-up; and Jodelis Diaz, fourth runner-up. Other semifinalists were Nicolette Bendick, Kelsey Fanelli, Chelsea Koryak, Karla McCormick, Julia Pauline, Natalie Romano, Andrea Shen, Olivia Suchko, Monet Tiberii and Cristina Virgilio. Georgia Kantner was voted Miss Amity by fellow contestants. The pageant was held at the Hyatt Regency at the Pittsburgh International Airport.
LaQuatra, 23, qualified for the state pageant after being named Miss Pittsburgh USA. She is a former Miss Pennsylvania's Outstanding Teen. The title is part of the Miss America Organization, which is not affiliated with Miss Universe. She is a graduate of Point Park University, where she earned a bachelor of arts degree in broadcast communications.
LaQuatra has competed in pageants since her teen years. A bout with bacterial meningitis resulted in LaQuatra losing her hearing and sense of balance age at four years. She hears with a chochlear implant, one of several surgeries she underwent over a period of years. She attended DePaul School for Hearing and Speech, where she recovered listening and spoken-language skills.
