For Jessica Strohm, 25, who will compete in the upcoming Miss USA Pageant, winning a crown has nothing to do with glitz and glam and everything to do with "heart and determination."
"Yes, the beauty pageant industry has definitely developed stereotypes over the years as being all about looks and cutthroat competition but, for me, winning a crown has allowed me to develop a sense of empowerment as a woman so I can make a difference in the lives of others," Strohm said. "What people don't understand is that pageants teach you how to have a sense of confidence and how to be proud of who you are."
The Falmouth native, who is also a New England Patriots cheerleader, began her reign as Miss New Hampshire this past October and will soon begin training for this summer's Miss USA Pageant. The event, which will be broadcast nationally this summer, will focus on three components including an interview portion as well as a swimsuit and evening gown competition.
While Strohm has only competed twice before and New Hampshire has only placed four times in Miss USA Pageant history (according to its website), Strohm is confident she can once again win just by being herself.
"When I first started competing, I had no trainer or coach and I just kind of bought a dress, walked on stage, and did my best. What I learned was that these kinds of platforms allowed me to put the best parts of my life forward and enabled me to talk about my passions and who I was as a person, not just what I looked like," Strohm said. "Now that I'll be competing on a national level, there is a lot more to it but the same premise is there -- which is to get out of my comfort zone and embrace life's opportunities."
As the competition (which is being run by global company IMG) unfolds, Strohm is still fulfilling her duties as Miss New Hampshire. She represents organizations like Best Buddies, Muscular Dystrophy Association, and the American Cancer Society. Because she also holds a full-time job as an area manager for Performance Foodservice and a part-time job as a waitress at the British Beer Company in Manchester, New Hampshire, her schedule is tight. However, she said public appearances and active partnerships only further prepare her for a Miss USA win.
"Having a title has allowed me to get more involved with these amazing organizations and refine my skills as a public speaker," Strohm said. "Sometimes people forget that after we win a crown, part of that honor is carrying on responsibilities throughout the year. Because that's such a short amount of time, I have really been dedicated and committed to helping as much as I can."
One additional duty that Strohm chose to pick up after her win was to be involved with the New Hampshire Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence. As a person who has suffered domestic abuse in the past, she said she chose to share her physical and emotional pain with others to help them in their own experiences.
"I had to deal with an abusive situation four years ago and being involved with this organization has helped me speak out against abuse and has also helped me further embrace my dreams," Strohm said. "Even though that was a hard time in my life, it showed me that you can't let anyone or anybody hold you back from pursing your passions and your aspirations."
As Strohm continues to win beauty competitions and pursue a career as a television personality through media outlets like Dirty Water TV on NESN and North Shore Magazine TV, her mother Kim Strohm couldn't be more proud. While Mom admits she "never could have imagined" how much her daughter would accomplish in this field, Kim Strohm also said her daughter has always been "bound and determined."
"Her career choice has been a surprise because beauty pageants weren't a part of Jessie's childhood. But I also know that she has always been the type to wrap her mind around an idea and never let go," Kim said. "Even when she tried out for the New England Patriots squad, she didn't make it until her fourth try. She got closer and closer each time and worked extremely hard until that goal was a reality."
While Kim, who is an administrative assistant and assistant emergency management director for Falmouth Fire Rescue Department, feels that her daughter's ability to take risks is the secret to her success, the proud mother also credits the town of Falmouth with establishing a sturdy platform for her children growing up. From Jessica's dance lessons at Falmouth Dance Academy to spending every summer cooking and serving food at the Falmouth Strawberry Festival, Kim said there has been overwhelming support from the entire town, which has helped Jessica and Kim's other daughter, Kailee, grow up to be "strong women."
"I'm not only proud of Jessie for going after her dreams but I'm also proud of all the kids who the town of Falmouth produces who are doing great things," Kim said. "There are so many people that have touched our lives from the time the kids were little and, as a community, there has been ongoing wonderful positive encouragement which has helped shape my daughters into who they are."
While Strohm is now a Manchester, N.H. resident, she also holds strong ties to Falmouth and will hold her Miss USA send-off party May 15 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Landfall Restaurant in Woods Hole as a way to further connect with her hometown. She explained that, long before she entered the world of beauty competitions, the Falmouth community helped set the stage for her eventual crowning.
"There is no better feeling than crossing the bridge and coming home to see everyone and catch up on all that's going on," she said. "Growing up and cheering for Pop Warner and dancing for the Falmouth Dance Academy is where I got my start and I'll never forget that. Falmouth is home."

Ex-Miss Wisconsin tears up thanking Trump at rally
A Donald Trump supporter who claimed to be Miss Wisconsin 2005 thanked the GOP front-runner in an emotional moment at a Tuesday rally for his help as she struggles with an incurable disease.
She thanked Trump for sending her a handwritten note and said it lifted her spirits after she decided to sign a "Do Not Resuscitate" order as her condition worsened.
She also thanked Trump for the fame that came with her pageant experience, which she said helped her son secure a scholarship.

“I'm here right now to thank you in person because that is my biggest dream," she said.
"Being able to stand on the stage with you in 2005, the outpouring of love that came from that ultimately provided my son when he graduates high school with a full ride to college.”
She repeated multiple times that her son is a Mexican-American and that Trump's generosity helped him.
Trump attempted to convince her she would be ok, before leaving the stage to hug her.
“We’re going to be watching your boy, but you’re going to hopefully be around, you aren't going to have anyone watching," he said. "Those doctors are going to be so wrong.”
Various pageant blogs and an online fundraising page from FundAnything, which Trump had invested in, claim that 2005 Miss Wisconsin Melissa Young is very sick.
The fundraising page shows more than $18,000 raised for a college scholarship for Young's son.

The Miss Universe 2016 pageant events saw Miss Puerto Rico being stripped of her crown because Kristhielee Caride admitted to being camera-shy. Not many expected the ricochet of this decision by Miss Universe Puerto Rico director Desiree Lowry on the mental health of Kristhielee Caride.
New York Daily News reports that the former Miss Universe candidate went into a dark place when her crown as Miss Puerto Rico was taken away from her. Following the decision by Miss Universe Puerto Rico director Desiree Lowry, Kristhielee Caride reportedly went on several days without food or sleep.
Kristhielee Caride honestly admitted that she needed professional help and care after the Miss Universe Puerto Rico title for the Miss Universe pageant was taken away from her. Having worked hard to win the Miss Universe candidacy, Kristhielee Caride said that she needed help to come to terms with the sudden loss. Her hospital admission for severe depression lasted a few days for the former Miss Universe candidate.
The health treatment seems to have helped Kristhielee Caride as she is now ready to fight back for her Miss Universe candidacy once more. With the support of her mother and the help of her lawyer, the former Miss Universe Puerto Rico will take Miss Universe Puerto Rico director Desiree Lowry.
Brenda Santiago, the mother of Kristhielee Caride, says their intention is to bring out their side of the story in the Miss Universe Puerto Rico situation to arrive at the truth. Brenda Santiago also took to social media to thank friends and supporters on behalf of the former Miss Universe candidate.
US Weekly reports that Miss Universe Puerto Rico director Desiree Lowry claims to be protecting the organization with her decision to remove the crown from Kristhielee Caride. The Miss Universe Puerto Rico director was reportedly unhappy when the former Miss Universe Puerto Rico candidly admitted in an interview that she does not like being in front of cameras.
"I wanted the earth to swallow me," the Miss Universe Puerto Rico director said. "You always have to put your best face forward, it's a given that we are going to be in front of cameras and that we have to answer all types of questions."

MIKE’S RELATIONSHIP DISAPPOINTS MISS UNIVERSE FANS, WANTS BEAUTY QUEEN TO FOCUS ON ADVOCACIES

Early this week, Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach and Dr Mike confirmed that they have started dating. It was definitely not long ago when the duo first started sharing photos on social media, teasing fans about the status of their relationship. When Pia and Mike, however, admitted to seeing each other, the newfound relationship drew mixed reactions from fans.
In an interview with Extra, Pia Wurtzbach admitted that she has started dating. Although the beauty queen did not reveal who she was seeing, may started to assume that she was talking about the hottest doctor alive. It has also been previously reported that she changed her relationship status on her personal Facebook account to “in a relationship with Mikhail Varshavski.”
Speaking to Wonderwall, Dr. Mike, himself, also admitted that he is in a “fairly new relationship” with Pia Wurtzbach.
“I am dating Pia. It’s a fairly new relationship but I’m really excited to see where it can go!”
After winning Miss Universe, Pia Wurtzbach has been constantly asked about her dating life. The beauty queen would then jokingly insist that she has not been asked by anyone after winning the coveted crown, to her surprise. She speculated that some of them were probably intimidated by her. She also said that she wanted to focus on her duties as Miss Universe.
Wurtzbach admitting that she is starting to date definitely come as a surprise given that during a recent Facebook chat, she claimed that there is no specific someone in her life. While her holding her sash, Pia added that being Miss Universe is her utmost priority.
Now that Pia has started dating Dr. Mike, some of the fans were clearly disappointed. Rather than focusing on her advocacies, they pointed out that Pia Wurtzbach was more concerned about going to glamorous events and meeting new people. They also encouraged the Miss Universe 2015 winner to share less of her personal life on social media.
“Sharing your love life is a bonus for us but as one of your supporters, I would like to know and see more of you being the Miss Universe 2015. I would like or we would like rather, to know or be updated of your advocacies. I have checked Facebook and here and nothing can be found. Please give us an update,” a netizen wrote on Pia’s Instagram account.
A few of the Miss Universe 2015 supporters also started to doubt the true intentions of Dr. Mike, wondering if he was just using Wurtzbach for her fame. Former fans over at Fashion Pulis also criticized Pia for “giving in to the first white man she met.” They also reacted negatively towards a photo on Dr. Mike’s Snapchat account, wherein the two were seen lying in bed together.
“A little discretion is highly requested. A photo in a more tasteful manner would have been more acceptable. Remember that you are representing all the women of the universe. PLEASE REPRESENT WITH CLASS AND DIGNITY. I think that is not too much to ask.”
Meanwhile, some of the loyal supporters of Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach immediately came to her defense. They insisted that Pia Wurtzbach would not let her relationship with Dr. Mike get in the way of her obligations, adding that we should all just be happy for the couple.
In a previous interview back in January, Pia Wurtzbach denied claims that the winner of Miss Universe is expected to stay single for the duration of her reign.
“There’s no boyfriend rule. It’s not forbidden to be with somebody as long as you focus on your duties, you know your responsibilities, and you don’t let it disrupt you. So with me, its good that I don’t have a boyfriend. They don’t have to worry about anything.”
