Kylie differentiates Miss Universe, Miss International
TOKYO -- Winning Philippine bet Kylie Verzosa called the Miss International competition a "different pageant" as the contestants are also judged based on their behind-the-scenes performances.
"Miss International is a different pageant because you get to know the girls more. They (judges and organizers) get to talk to the girls, know the girls on a personal level," Verzosa told ABS-CBN News in an exclusive interview here on Friday, a day after she was crowned Miss International.
"They base it on how the girls work backstage and their personality," she added.
The final portion of the event is also different from the question and answer format of the Miss Universe as the top 15 candidates were each given a minute to deliver a speech to justify why they deserve to take home the crown.
"It's a prepared speech. Before coming here, I already had in mind what I wanted to talk about and these are the things I thought are most relevant and things that hit my heart," Verzosa said.
The Philippine bet wowed pageant followers as she discussed culture and international understanding.
"If I become Miss International 2016, I will devote myself to cultural understanding and international understanding because I believe that it is in developing in each of us sensitivity to other cultures that we expand our horizons, tolerate difference and appreciate diversity. All these enables us to achieve international understanding and I believe I am prepared to take on this responsibility," she said.
Kylie: I never wanted to become a beauty queen
TOKYO -- Miss International 2016 Kylie Verzosa revealed that she never wanted to become a beauty queen even if she was already a familiar face in the Philippine modelling scene.
"When I started modelling, I never wanted to become a beauty queen," Verzosa told ABS-CBN News in an exclusive interview on Friday. "I thought it's 'just a beauty pageant' [with] big hair, thick make-up."
"I told myself when I get into a pageant I am not doing that."
While she eventually had a change of heart about joining pageants, Verzosa made it a point to remind herself that she does not "have to pretend to be anyone else" during competitions.
"I'm going there as me, take it or leave it. I don't have to follow what they say. If you like it (me) then okay; if not, it's not my fault," she said.
She finished in the top 15 when she first joined Binibining Pilipinas in 2015, along with Pia Wurtzbach, who was named the country's bet to the Miss Universe pageant.
Verzosa joined again a year later and was crowned Binibining Pilipinas-International. "The second time, I trained really hard. I didn't want to lose. I didn't want to leave my legacy as Kylie Verzosa, top 15," she said.
While joining beauty pageants was not her first love, Verzosa said she is now happy that she has been given an opportunity to push for her mental health awareness advocacy.
"Now that I have a voice, and now that it's being heard more, I love it. I'm being listened to more so what I say will matter," she said.
