Yes, the 65th Miss Universe is indeed happening in the Philippines
This, despite the endless speculations earlier this year that the pageant would not be held in the country.
But, as it turns out, there was truth to those rumors.
During the partners launch for the 65th Miss Universe competition on Wed, Nov 16, former Ilocos Sur Governor Luis "Chavit" Singson admitted that the Miss Universe Organization already cancelled plans to hold the event in the Philippines.  Singson is identified as one of the big local investors of the event.
"There was a time na kinancel, ha," he told Coconuts Manila and other media outfits at the sidelines of the partners launch held at the Makati Shangri-La Hotel in Makati City. "Ako, (sabi ko), hindi pwedeng kanselahan kasi bayad kami, fully paid, and we signed a contract. It was a breach of contract."
("There was a time it was canceled. I said, they can't cancel because we paid, we're fully paid.")
Singson added the Miss Universe Organization (MUO) had no problems with the Philippines hosting the event. However, it was the owners of the MUO who wanted to pull out.
When asked why the owners of the Miss Universe wanted to initially pull out, Singson said: "Ang mga may-ari kasi Jew."
MUO is owned by WME-IMG, run by Patrick Whitesell and Ari Emanuel, who happens to be Jewish.
Singson did not elaborate, but a previous report published on the Philippine Daily Inquirer insinuated that Emanuel was offended by President Rodrigo Duterte’s controversial remarks referencing Hitler.
But the former governor managed to convince MUO and its owners to push through with the pageant in the Philippines recently, thanks to his friends in the Jewish community.
He said preparations for the pageant began even before the Philippine presidential elections last May.
Now that the 65th Miss Universe competition is officially happening in the Philippines, Singson is ecstatic.
"Tuloy na tuloy na (It's really pushing through)," Singson said. "Miss Universe is home."
The Philippines previously hosted the Miss Universe pageant in 1974 and 1994.
