Miss Orlando Courtney Sexton is crowned Miss Florida 2016 by MaryKatherine Fechtel, last year’s winner, during the 81st annual Miss Florida Pageant on Saturday in Lakeland.
LAKELAND — It was a bit of physique, an in-the-moment response, a dash of elegance and a modern dance that propelled Miss Orlando to taking the crown and making the walk.

Courtney Sexton, 23, from Starke won the 81st annual Miss Florida Pageant in front of about 2,200 people in the Youkey Theatre at the Lakeland Center on Saturday night.
On stage after the 8 p.m. pageant, Sexton, a health administration major at the University of Central Florida, got her crown, sash and a bouquet of red roses from the 2015 Miss Florida, MaryKatherine Fechtel. Jones receives an $18,000 scholarship for claiming the title.
The crowning moment followed three days of preliminary competitions also held in the Youkey Theatre, at which contestants were judged in fitness and talent, along with an evening gown and on-stage question portion.
When asked by co-host Laura Rutledge about the war on terror for her on-stage question, Sexton said she would "support the commander and stand behind the military" and recruit allies to combat terrorism.
Sexton now goes on to the 2017 Miss America Pageant from Sept. 6 to 11 in Atlantic City, N.J.
