Miss Universe bets to visit Davao, other areas despite terror threats
DAVAO CITY - Miss Universe candidates will be visiting key provinces in the country for "ancillary events" before the main pageant night despite terror threats in some areas, Tourism Secretary Wanda Teo said Saturday.
"Miss Universe candidates will be visiting Davao, Cebu, Vigan, and Bicol for ancillary events," Teo said.
Candidates set to visit Davao will participate in a fashion show showcasing fabrics from Mindanao, those set to visit Cebu will take part in a beachwear fashion show, while a Filipiniana terno fashion event featuring the contestants will be staged in Vigan. Bicol, on the other hand, will host "adventure" activities for the Miss Universe hopefuls, said Teo.
The 40 to 50 candidates who will stay in Davao from January 15 to 19 will also visit popular tourist destinations in the city, including the Eden Nature Park, the Malagos Garden Resort and the Pearl Farm resort, the tourism chief said.
The tourism department said it is confident that the government can provide ample security for all Miss Universe candidates despite threats of terrorism in the southern portion of the country.
"Remember, Miss Earth was here and security was okay. So I think we are prepared for the Miss Universe just as we were prepared with the Miss Earth," Teo said.
The DOT has been coordinating with the Philippine National Police, the Armed Forces of the Philippines, the Department of Interior and Local Government, and local government units for security preparations, Tourism undersecretary Kat De Castro added.
The Department of Transportation has also been preparing re-routing schemes to ensure that the pageant will not worsen traffic in the metro.
"One of the orders of Pres Duterte is when we do the final show of Ms U in Manila, hindi matra-traffic mga tao because Ms U will be happening on Jan. 30, on a Monday morning," De Castro said.
The coronation ceremony of this year's Miss Universe will be held at the Mall of Asia Arena on January 30 at "around 8 to 9" in the morning.
The country's hosting of the Miss Universe was confirmed earlier this month, after rumors that the pageant would be cancelled and amid a petition to reconsider holding it in the Philippines.
