Miss PH Earth says gown worn by winner Miss Ecuador was designed for her
Miss Philippines Earth 2016 Imelda Schweighart wears a gold Leo Almodal gown in a video she posted on Facebook. Right, the same gown is worn by Miss Earth 2016 Katherine Espin in a photo from the Philippine Pageantry Instagram page.
Even in defeat, Miss Philippines Earth 2016 Imelda Schweighart still managed to make this headline all about her.
The Filipino-German beauty failed to make the Top 16 semifinals of the Miss Earth 2016 beauty pageant held Saturday at the Mall of Asia Arena. But shortly after her elimination, Schweighart posted a video of herself wearing a gold gown she said was made for her by designer Leo Almodal.
Apparently, the same gold gown was worn by the winner, Miss Ecuador Katherine Espin, en route to her coronation. Since Schweighart failed to advance, it seemed the gown was given to Espin instead.
With her loss, Schweighart became the first Philippine bet that did not advance to the semifinal round of Miss Earth since 2010 when the pageant was held in Vietnam.
She is also only the second Filipina not to figure prominently in the pageant when it was held in Philippine soil, the frequent host country of Miss Earth. In 2007, Jeanne Harn also failed to make the cut but did win the Miss Photogenic special award.
Schweighart’s defeat might have something to do with her controversial remark that was caught on Facebook Live when she compared President Rodrigo Duterte to Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler in an awkward conversation with Miss Austria Kimberly Budinsky.
Schweighart drew flak from her remark and eventually apologized for it even as she claimed she was “pro-Duterte.”
But Schweighart’s propensity for controversy did not end there. Days before the coronation night, she posted a Facebook rant that has since been deleted when she accused two Filipinas of laughing at her during a preliminary judging event.
“What is wrong with this country? Why are people so fond of pulling each other down?,” Schweighart wrote in her post.
Miss Earth 2008 Karla Henry felt that she was one of the girls Schweighart alluded to and responded with an open letter also on Facebook denying the latter’s accusation. In the letter which has also since been deleted, Henry also had some choice words and unsolicited advice to Schweighart.
“I did not laugh at you because after what you have said and done the past few weeks I was actually curious of what you had to say… stop having so much self pity and start getting your head in the game…believe me my dear not very many beauty queens would get away with half the stuff you have done… Stop focusing on what everyone thinks of you, and start actually being the best version of yourself that you so fondly say all the time,” Henry wrote.
Schweighart did have some success in the pre-pageant activities when she placed second runner-up in the Miss Earth Hanna’s sponsored pre-pageant last October 8 and during the press presentation of the candidates when she and Miss Ecuador were both named Darlings of the Press.
The Latina beauty, however, dominated most of the pre-pageant events winning the most medals (three gold, one silver and one bronze) in the challenge events including the gold in the Long Gown and Resorts Wear competition. She also won the special awards Marco Polo: Star of the Night, Miss Phoenix Petroleum and Miss Rotary Best Body.
Compared to Schweighart, Miss Sweden Cloie Syquia Skarne, daughter of actor Gabby Concepcion and former model-actress Jenny Syquia, fared much better in the pageant, finishing in the Top 8 and winning silver and bronze medals in the pre-pageant challenges. She also won the Face of the Century and the Miss Mövenpick Resort & Spa Boracay special awards.
The other winners of the Miss Earth 2016 pageant were Miss Colombia Michelle Gomez (Miss Earth-Air 2016), Miss Venezuela Stephanie de Zorzi (Miss Earth-Water 2016) and Miss Brazil Bruna Zanardo (Miss Earth-Fire 2016).
