MANILA -- In less than 74 days, the world's most prestigious beauty pageant will once again take place in the Philippines, 43 years after the country first hosted it in 1974.
Representatives of the pageant, the Department of Tourism, and sponsors on Wednesday signed a partnership contract sealing their commitment to the staging of the 65th Miss Universe pageant in the country on January 30, 2017.
Shawn McClain, vice president of business development and marketing of the Miss Universe Organization, said the Philippines will benefit from the 3-hour event that will be telecast worldwide.
"We will have a team of about 400 people here, and we're gonna be visiting lots of different places, and we're going to be showing the world what the Philippines has to offer. And we're gonna be helping boost tourism, and putting positive focus on everything that the Philippines is and stands for and will be in the future," McClain said.
McClain also said the Philippine government will not spend anything for the pageant. "It's all private sector," he added.
The pageant's official website (www.65thmissuniverse.com) and Facebook page (@MissUniverse65th) were also launched. The platforms will carry updates and announcements about the pageant.
The Philippines is fielding Maxine Medina, a 25-year-old interior designer and model, in the pageant. She will attempt to succeed Pia Wurtzbach, the first Filipina to win the Miss Universe title in over four decades.
The two other previous Miss Universe winners from the Philippines are Margie Moran (1973) and Gloria Diaz (1969), mother of actress and model Isabelle Daza.
