The Miss Pacific Islands is not a beauty pageant.  It really does serve a useful purpose for the young women who have chosen this platform to liberate them from not being heard, seen, respected or simply just to celebrate their culture and femininity.
There are often contentious perspectives about beauty pageants and how they propagate dangerous standards of beauty and femininity.
However, think a minute:  the young women who enter the pageants are exercising their freedom of choice; FREEDOM to try something daring; FREEDOM to subject themselves to your opinions and that is: BRAVERY!
Pageants are not for the faint hearted. Many of the women who have entered,  have become leaders in their chosen fields.  Every reigning Miss Pacific Islands and Miss Samoa I have interviewed, have spoken about the Character Building as they journeyed, from strength to strength.

Have a look at all the contestants of the Miss Pacific Islands Pageant this year and tell me what you think they have in common?
After getting to know all of them first hand, I can tell you what they all have in common. They are all GOD-FEARING-INTELLIGENT-SASHAFIERCE-AINT NOBODY GOT TIME FOR NONSENSE AMAZING AMBASSADORS.
Yes, they all won the ovarian lottery with their beauty but what’s wrong with celebrating that too? As you can see, there is no one way to be beautiful in the Pacific.
Yes they are slim but hey, Pacific people are not naturally obese and we want to promote healthy living and combat the epidemic rise in NCDs spreading across our PI nations like bacteria on an open petri-dish.
These young ladies have chosen their paths, let’s celebrate them. I know it’s often said that pageants objectify women but remember, that is also an embodiment of your personal thoughts and values about pageants and perhaps derivative of one perspective you have CHOSEN to side with. We can do some serious damage to our ignorance by reading up a bit on both sides.

If these young ladies have chosen to enter the Pageant, they do so at their free will to celebrate their Pacific History and Embrace their Future.
Peace on Mother Earth.

The Cross River State Governor, Senator Ben Ayade has maintained that motivation remains the surest way of getting the best out of young people who are taking the right decisions.
The governor made this assertion while announcing the sum of N10million for his Senior Special Assistant, Events, Mr. Tom Ikpeme for effectively packaging the just concluded Miss Africa, Climate Change pageant in Calabar.
The governor further disclosed that he did that to encourage young talents and hard work and explained that Miss Africa is a dream which he conceived to bring Africans together and that today over 400milion people over the world watched the Miss Africa, talking of Africa unity.
Speaking earlier the Special Adviser, Governor’s Office and Events, Mr. Kenn Aklah, said that few months ago when the governor conceived the idea of Miss Africa, it looked unachievable, but due to the commitment and consistency of the governor, the dream has become a reality with over 400 million people watching the maiden edition of Miss Africa globally, and that the issues of climate change were very dear to Cross River and will be the prime responsibility of the new Queen to promote.
Aklah stated that, “by Saturday when this event was being beamed live, we have populated acceptance and more than 340 million people were trending and watching and following live the event all over the world. The Queen is an Ambassador of Africa and Cross River state representing us to talk on issues of climate change which are very dear to us as a state, and there was the need to integrate Africa”.
The SA Governor’s Office said that the Miss Africa contest has equally helped to boost the Cross River State tourism and the industrial revolution being initiated by the Governor Ben Ayade led administration in the state.

MANILA, Philippines – Binibining Pilipinas Supranational 2016 Joanna Eden maybe the youngest in this year's batch of queens, but the Filipino-Australian who represented Quezon said she's ready to compete in the Miss Supranational pageant to be held in Poland on December 2 (December 3, Manila time)
During a press conference last November 10, Joanna, 20, opened up about pre-pageant work. She said she dedicated time and energy to improve her walk or pasarela, a very important component of the competition.
"For me, I really changed my walk. I am not naturally a power walker. So I really dedicated a lot of time and effort to making my walk powerful, Like making it sure that there was a statement when I walk. I’m a little bit awkward so I really have to work looking more comfortable with myself and being more playful," she said.
Fans earlier dubbed her pasarela the "couldn't care less" walk. Joanna said she hoped people will see more improvement. (READ: 8 fun facts: Bb Pilipinas Supranational 2016 Joanna Eden)
"I mean the 'couldn’t care less walk' in the not to trying hard way. But I do think when people see my walk now, they will [say], she’s really improved and I’m a power walker now."
Three years since Mutya Datul won the title in 2013, Joanna said she's aware that there are expectations from her to do well in the competition. She is also glad for the support from Filipino fans and her pageant sisters because it motivates them to do their best.
"I’m so proud to have a country like the Philippines behind me. I feel like the support behind us is so strong, and we can feel it whether it be through social media, or having to react to us in person. I feel like that’s the reason why we should be proud. There’s no reason for us to feel any extra pressure or anything that would make us feel scared or uncomfortable…It even gives us more motivation to do our best, even better than our best. So we can make the country really proud," she said.

For this year, the Miss Supranational pageant will be hosted by two countrties – Poland for the finals and Slovakia for the other activities. Asked what she's looking foward to in her European journey, the Filipino-Australian beauty queen said she's looking forward to the tours, the snow, and simply experiencing two very different countries.

At 20 years old, Joanna said that she has grown so much during the past months she spent with pageant sisters during their training.
"I feel like for me especially this year, I’ve learned to really appreciate everything, everything that has happened to me.
"I don’t want to keep repeating myself but in regards to learning things from my sisters, I’ve learned definitely how to control my emotions. I am a bit of a panicker. Like I stress a lot and I remember we went to the beach, the time we went to Batangas, something happened [and] we ended up stranded in a boat, and I remember like everyone was scared and I was freaking out. I was panicking, I was crying.... you always have to know [when] is an appropriate time to show certain emotions, and I think that will help me when I’m on stage also. I need to compose myself," she said. – Rappler.com

We are in love with the entire batch of this year. In this post, we hereby analyse the chances of the Indian flag bearer, Miss Priyadarshini Chatterjee in her quest to win the ultimate crown and conquer the queenly throne as the successor of Mireia Lalaguna from Spain, the very beautiful Miss World 2015.
Talking of Priyadarshini, she looks like she’s won it already. That’s the confidence as we see it in her at the moment. There’s something in her smile that oozes peace and serenity; calmness and positivity. She has an inspiring story as well. Having faced so many problems in early life being a premature baby and being diagnosed with cancer at a very young age, the way she’s turned her hardship into her stride is simply amazing. The path she’s paved for herself is a strong example for all who lose the will to live and are always bombarded with negative thoughts. There’s a strong side of personality to this girl.

NEW YORK – Catriona Elisa Gray is the Philippines’ bet for the Miss World Beauty pageant in Washington DC on December 18.
Gray wrote the script for her own contestant introduction video to Miss World 2016, now seen by more than half a million viewers worldwide.

“Syempre, I’m introducing myself, so who better to write the script than me. I wanted not only to show the beautiful sights of our country but also who I am as a person,” she said.

Gray said her unique name is a combination of her two grandmothers’ names.

“My grandmother on my dad’s side, she is of Scottish heritage and she used to speak Gaelic, which is the Celtic Scottish language. She used to paint these beautiful oil canvass paintings and she would sign her name at the bottom. In Gaelic, Catherine is Catriona. My middle name Elisa is actually taken from my lola on my mom's side 'coz her name was Elsa,” she explained.

Gray grew up in Australia, but as an adult, she chose to live and work in the Philippines as a fashion model.

She may have lived the glitzy and glamorous life of a model, but her real passion, she said, is helping the poor kids in the Philippines, especially in Tondo, Manila.

“I was shocked that families were living with such little resources, that they were getting by on so little. I think if you give a child education, they can really make something of themselves, they can help their families in the long run,” she said.

Being a creative person, Gray said art and music are part of her life.

With less than three weeks before the Miss World pageant, Gray believes she is ready to take on the international stage and hopefully bring home another crown and scepter for the Philippines.

The 28-year-old Filipino-Indian beauty queen and model will be joined by model and actor Mark McMahon for the Ramp Modelling Workshop in UAE 2016 at the Intaleq Training Centre and at the Al Jaheli Theatre of the Armed Forces Officers Club.
“Basically, I’ll be teaching children who are as young as four, five, seven years old. And then probably 13 and above — so [it will be a mix of] adult and children,” says Raj.
Raj will also be joined by Philippine “beauty queen maker” Jonas Gaffud, who has been credited for moulding beauty queens such as the reigning Miss Universe Pia Wurtzbach, former Miss Philippines and now Victoria’s Secret model Janine Tugonon, and Miss Universe runners-up Shamcey Supsup and MJ Lastimosa.
Gulf News tabloid! sat down with Raj for a one-on-one interview ahead of her workshop in Abu Dhabi.

What does it take to become a model and beauty titlist? What are the skills and qualities needed to become one?
I don’t know really what qualifications are needed to be a model, but I can speak for myself and on behalf of beauty queens. We are taught how to [walk the] ramp like a ramp model, but there’s a difference when walking like a beauty queen and like a model. What supermodels do is different from what we are taught to do. But, based on experience, I’ve learned also a lot from the modelling industry.
I think one important thing is that you should like what you do, especially with children. It’s nice if they like what they do, because you know they’re focused. It’s hard to walk on heels if you don’t want to do what you are doing.
[Walking right] builds confidence in how you carry yourself professionally. I think it also helps in that way.

Looking back, what do you think brought you success in the Binibing Pilipinas Universe and the Miss Universe?
Wow, that was a long time ago — that was like six years. You know I was so young when I joined Miss Universe. I was just 22 and at that time I was not emotionally mature yet. But looking back, I think it was the Lord who really orchestrated everything to happen, because even if I was so beautiful or talented or thin or tall, the physical appearance is just a bonus.
The real reason why I think I won Miss Universe fourth runner-up is because the Lord has a purpose for me to be there. And now I understand why: I am able to influence young ladies, especially children. I am able to share my experience and learnings. Especially in [dealing with] insecurities in life as a woman or as a young girl. When their physical features are not the same as the other women they see on TV or in the magazine, they will feel bad about themselves.
I think one of the reasons the Lord allowed me to be in that situation is for me to become a voice for women who are feeling insecure, that there’s actually no real reason for them to be insecure because we are all wonderfully made. We should celebrate the way we look, not to copy whoever.

What advantages do Filipinos have, if any, in a pageant like Miss Universe?
Well right now there are really huge advantages for a Filipino beauty queen in an international beauty pageant because we’ve been placing in the past few years in many beauty pageants.
I think right now if a Filipina enters an international pageant she is easily recognised because of the country she’s representing. That’s the same theory why the Venezuelans, the Columbians, the Indians have been winning in international pageants. Whenever you see them you always look at them as winners because they are beautiful women. I think the Philippines is in the same situation. Whenever they wear the sash of the Philippines they always look at the Philippines as someone who is beautiful because we are. Someone who is competitive, someone who is strong, someone who can be a spokesperson for the world to see. So right now, it’s really an advantage.

In a few months the new Miss Universe winner will be crowned. What do you think of the chances of Maxine Medina making it a historic back-to-back win for the Philippines? What support and advice are you giving her?
So far I really haven’t talked to Maxine compared to other past beauty queens, but I remember I [gave her advice] about the Q&A portion, which is one of the most tedious part[s] of a beauty pageant. She’s beautiful physically, she knows how to walk and I’m sure she’s emotionally ready. One thing I told her about the Q&A is that you should really know who you are. You should know yourself first before you could give a comment, suggestion or opinion about something. In beauty pageants we are only given 30 seconds to answer a question and people would judge you because of what you say from that one question. I told her whatever comes first to your mind just say it, don’t complicate things, don’t overthink, don’t try to impress the judges. Whatever comes to your mind just say it, because it will come naturally. I know that she’s been training really hard and I’m sure she’s ready right now.

Do you think there is enough support from the government to aspiring beauty titlists?
I think the Philippines has more heavy issues to focus on, not just the beauty pageants. Yes I agree it would give the Philippines a very nice image in the international scene and that it could also help in tourism. But there are also many issues like poverty, education, drugs that the President is really fighting for now.

What are the biggest misconceptions about beauty queens?
As for me I haven’t experienced anything that is negative as a beauty queen. I think [that] people expect you to look good everyday is a pressure.

Don’t miss it!

Savai’i takes centre stage in Pacific Pageant

ENJOYING THE SEA BREEZE: The girls enjoying their time in the sun at one of the beach Fales in Savaii, the Vacation Beach Fales.
We often hear people say that if you are visiting Samoa for the first time, you haven’t been to Samoa if you have not been to Savai’i.
With that in mind, the eight contestants vying for the Miss Pacific Island Pageant Crown this year will return to their respective homes at the end of the week knowing that they have definitely been in Samoa.
This is because they spent two days on the big Island of Savai’i, lapping up the wonderful hospitality as well as the island heat. For the organisers of the Pageant, this was the first time they’ve taken the contestants to the big island of Savai’i.
The trip was organised by the organising committee of the pageant in Samoa in collaboration with the Savaii Samoa Tourism Authority.
The contestants were warmly welcomed in a true Samoan way starting from their arrival.
The students from the Don Bosco College at Salelologa waited the arrival of the contestants at the wharf.
Then the contestants were welcomed by the whole school with special performances from the school.
They were also given the opportunity to introduce themselves and dance in front of the whole school.
The reigning Miss Pacific Islands, Abigail Havora, spoke on behalf of the contestants to thank Samoa for the welcome they had received.
“We were touched and emotional seeing how you welcomed us, and for that we thank you,” said Ms. Havora.
“Everything was just wonderful and it is something we will take back with us to our home lands. Seeing the performance today was just something amazing, I took a video of it and I will take it back to my country and show to the schools there and tell them that they need to up their game."
“But thank you once again for everything.”
The girls were then welcomed in a traditional way by the matai’s of the village of Faletagaloa Safune.
An Ava ceremony was held to welcome the girls. The girls started their rehearsals yesterday and a corporate dinner was held last night at the Amoa Resort for the lovely contestants.
Yesterday, they had rehearsals before they headed down to the waterfall at Palauli to cool down.
They are back in Apia today for the final formalities ahead of the big day on Friday.

Ellie Jones' lower jaw stopped growing when she was eight years old.
At first, her parents didn’t realise there was a problem, apart from the fact that her teeth were not aligned.
But when she went to have braces fitted to straighten her teeth when she was 14, an orthodontist realised her jaw had not grown for years.
Over the next six years, she underwent six years of ground-breaking treatment, which was “really painful but had to be done to sort the problem”.

Pictures of Ellie, both before and after surgery, went around the world in July and even prompted an invitation to shoot a portfolio from a London modelling agency.
It gave the keen photographer the courage to try her luck on the other side of the lens and inspire others.
“After my picture went in the media it did boost my confidence – what was said about me,” said Ellie, who works at TK Maxx in Prestatyn.

After a series of interviews Ellie was selected with three other local girls to compete in April’s Welsh final in Cardiff – and a crack at the Miss World title if she wins.
She said she never even told her work mates she was applying for Miss Wales and even her nain, Nova Jones, was struck dumb when she found out.

“She was absolutely speechless,” Ellie told the Daily Post . “All the family is proud that I have got to the final.
“I wouldn’t have considered doing this a couple of years ago. I was shy but it’s like I am a different person now.
“With all the nice comments I got from the media side of things I thought ‘Why Not, let’s go for it’.”
She says she is searching for local businesses to sponsor her and is also looking forward to doing charity work before next year’s Miss Wales final.

It was orthodontist Joy Hickman who realised Ellie’s jaw had not grown since she was eight.
She worked with consultant maxillofacial surgeon Emma Woolley to transform Ellie’s looks – and her outlook.
X-rays taken prior to and after surgery show the amazing difference it made to her appearance.
“It’s all really exciting because I have never done anything like this before,” she said. “It’s amazing.”

Beauty queen Nichole Manalo back in Manila after ‘surprise’ 3rd runner-up Miss Globe 2016 finish

Published November 30, 2016 11:26am
Filipina beauty queen Nichole Manalo returned to the Philippines early Wednesday after being declared 3rd runner-up in Miss Globe 2016 held in Albania last week.
Manalo's Philippine Airlines flight PR-669 arrived at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport terminal 2 at past 8 a.m.
Manalo, sister of actress Bianca Manalo, appeared tired because of her trip and the pageant, but said that she enjoyed the experience.
The Filipina beauty's title as 3rd runner-up was not announced during coronation night in Tirana, Albania last November 25.
The organizers announced later that Manalo was the pageant's 3rd runner-up and explained that her name was not announced because "the emcee forgot to take the third and fourth runner-up envelopes."
A belated coronation was held for Manalo and 4th runner-up Miss South Africa.
During the coronation, Manalo thanked Filipinos around the world for their support.

"To all my kababayans, actually I'm very much humbled to receive this crown. But what I'm grateful about is knowing that you have believed in me and you were there with me through this journey," she said. —ALG/KG, GMA News

Urvashi Rautela sizzles in Hrithik Roshan’s 'Kaabil' song 'Saara Zamaana'

Nov 29, 2016, 02.01 PM IST

Yamaha Fascino Miss Diva 2015 Urvashi Rautela, is all set to turn up the heat in Hrithik Roshan's 'Kaabil' song, 'Saara Zamaana'.

The former beauty queen who represented India at the prestigious Miss Universe pageant will be seen shaking her hips to Rajesh Roshan's tunes in the special song sequence. Director Sanjay Gupta had planned to recreate the classic song made famous by Amitabh Bachchan, with much more grandeur and this happens to be one of the major reasons why the 'Musafir' director roped in Urvashi.

Actor Rohit Roy who plays a baddie in the film along with brother Ronit Roy clicked a few pictures with Urvashi Rautela and posted it on Twitter. You can see Urvashi looking absolutely ravishing in a blue outfit that she donned for the song. The film is all set to release next year in January and the story is reported to be a revenge thriller which also stars actress Yami Gautam.

Speaking about the song Sanjay says, "In our version, the song will be sung by a female playback singer and picturised in the most ostentatious and imaginative way on Urvashi Rautela. A huge dome was erected and Urvashi sizzled like never before. "Echoing his sentiments was the film's producer Rakesh Roshan.

The yesteryear star said, "Urvashi gave it her all and I can tell you that the end result will blow people's mind away." Rakesh Roshan also stated that people will be 'tripping' on this song at night clubs and private parties through the party season of 2016-2017. This is the first time that the beauty queen will be paired opposite Hrithik, and it is indeed great news for all Urvashi Rautela fans.

Urvashi Rautela who will be seen in a never before avatar says, "I am super honoured to enact #Saarazamana that originally featured my favourite legendary actor #Amitabh Bachchan. All thanks to Hrithik."
