Auditions for the country’s biggest beauty pageant, Miss South Africa 2017, are coming to Port Elizabeth on August 6 and this year the prize package is R1-million.
The Miss SA pageant, which had two NMMU students Mikaela Oosthuizen from Port Elizabeth and Luyolo Mngonyama from Mthatha in its top 12 this year, will begin the search for 2017 finalists in Durban tomorrow and end it on August 27 in Johannesburg.
A statement released by the pageant organisers this week revealed that the winner of the Miss SA 2017 title will walk away with a cash prize of R1-million sponsored by Sun International and Cell C, among other prizes.
Former Miss SA herself and PR manager of Sun International, Claudia Henkel, said “we are delighted that, for the first time in the history of the pageant, R1-million in cash will be given to the young woman who takes the title”.
“This will change the winner’s life forever and enable her to accomplish whatever she wants to in life. We want to attract the best person for this most important role as a new ambassador for the country and this enables us to do so,” she said.
Oosthuizen commented with delight on this year’s cash prize. “It is a wonderful resource for Miss South Africa 2017 to use to not only empower herself but give back to the community. Miss South Africa has always been about the platform more than the prizes. However, having such a grand monetary prize will be a source of assistance in extending her reach to impact an even greater amount of people.”
The Port Elizabeth beauty encourages young women to enter the competition because the core purpose of the Miss SA pageant is to develop young women. “You don’t know how confident you are until you take a step forward,” she added.
Mngonyama believes that as much as the R1-million cash prize will attract more contestants, it should not be their ultimate motivation to enter the competition as being Miss SA is more about being an ambassador for South Africa.
“Go there knowing it’s not just about you being [in the] public eye, but rather about SA needing an ambassador. Confidence is key,” Mngonyama said.
Both Oosthuizen and Mngonyama said they hope the recipient of the cash prize will put it to good use and give back to the community.
