Dallas Teen to Represent Oregon at Miss Teen USA

DALLAS, Ore. - A Dallas teen will be representing the state of Oregon at the 34th annual Miss Teen USA pageant. 17-year-old Mikaela Bruer earned the right at the state competition last November at Mt. Hood Community College, representing Polk County.
The national pageant will be held at The Venetian in Las Vegas, Nevada on July 29-30. This is the first year that the Miss Teen USA will replace the swimsuit competition with an athletic wear competition. If Bruer wins, she will be the fourth person representing Oregon to nab the national title.
According to CNN, it's a nod to a more modern approach in an era where there are gender empowerment videos and commercial campaigns including "Always' #LikeAGirl" aimed at highlighting equality among the sexes. "This decision reflects an important cultural shift we're all celebrating that empowers women who lead active, purposeful lives and encourage those in their communities to do the same," said Paula Shegart, the president of the Miss Universe organization to the pageant's state directors. "Our hope is that this decision will help all of Miss Teen USA's fans recognize these young women for the strong, inspiring individuals they are."
According to her bio on the pageant's website, Bruer has a passion for helping both animals and people. Maintaining over a 4.0 GPA, she hopes to attend Cornell University to study agricultural management. With a growing thirst for adventure Mikaela has visited 12 countries and hopes to reach 20 by the age of 25. When she’s not busy raising and showing livestock, or competing as an all-star cheerleader, Bruer strives to “make the best better” by participating in her local 4-H programs.
