Costanilla: Miss Cebu: To cancel or not to cancel?

 Sunday, July 10, 2016
REACTIONS. After Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña announced the cancellation of the annual Miss Cebu beauty pageant starting next year due to budgetary constraints, I posted on my Facebook wall this question: Are you in favor of the mayor’s move or not?
Several netizens reacted. A few of them said it’s okay if the event is cancelled, after all, they said it’s an elitist activity. But majority of the reactors think that the beauty pageant should continue as an effective way of promoting Cebu.
One such reaction that I should print here comes from my good friend Tetta Baad, one of the members of the Cebu City Tourism Commission (CCTC).
CLARIFICATION. Here’s Tetta’s clarification: The annual budget for Miss Cebu from the city is between P200,000 and P300,000 covering a period of six months for pre-screening, selection of 12 finalists, all the training and workshops to prepare them and the staging of the pageant itself (every third Friday of January). The budget is augmented by ticket sales and sponsorship which are just enough to cover the expenses.
Miss Cebu was started 32 years ago to boost the week-long Sinulog festivities. Tourism is a major economic driver and Cebu has succeeded in becoming one of the country’s major destinations.
BRAND. Over the years, Miss Cebu has proven to be a notable brand with good track record. Many winners of this particular pageant have made a mark in national and international platforms. Bottom line: it is still the mayor’s decision on what to do with the project since the CCTC  is under his office. We hope the planned changes will make it better and we wish the mayor well.
ZUMBA. Another good friend, Kristine Sta. Cruz-Ebarle, public image director of the Rotary Club Cebu Fort San Pedro, says her club will hold a Zumba Mardi Gras party on Aug. 7 at Plaza Independencia as an opportunity for all health-conscious individuals to realize, appreciate and experience a healthy lifestyle and good nutrition.
COMMENDABLE. I commend Kristine and her Club for this wonderful activity which is actually a fund-raising project to support one of Rotary Club’s six areas of focus on maternal and child care. I gather that each participant will only pay P250 which will go to her Club’s health program as well as the purchase of school supplies for children at the SOS Children’s Village in Talamban. In return, the participants will get free singlet and could avail themselves of discounts in establishments that are also sponsors of the event. Those interested to support this laudable event may contact cellphone nos. 0922-827-5177 (Kristine and Allan Ebarle) and 0917-993-6690 (Sunshine Roxas).
AWARDEES. Let me congratulate three good friends for being declared as this year’s Talento Cebuano awardees in recognition of their contribution to the upliftment of the local arts and cultural scene. Gani Villarojo of Soundtraxx Production Studio will be commended for his numerous musical compositions and arrangements, Rudy Aviles will be recognized for his efforts to keep the Cebuano theater arts alive and Maria Donna Arquillano will be honored for being an international performing artist.
The three of them richly deserve their awards. The awarding ceremony will be on Friday afternoon at Robinson’s Galleria during the birthday and thanksgiving party to be hosted by Dr. Mila Espina, one of Cebu’s well-respected educators and civic leaders.
TIDBITS. The Bootleg Beatles will wow all Cebuanos in their concert on July 16, 8 p.m. at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel... I fully agree with the suggestion of reviving the Sugbo TV channel but it’s all up to the present Capitol leadership to give it a serious thought... The Cebu Catholic Television Network channel 47 will soon undergo a major and aggressive marketing blitz to further make its presence felt in the broadcast media scene.
