LONG BEACH, Calif. Nadia Mejia, the reigning Miss Corona Del Mar USA and daughter of local residents Gerardo and Kathy Mejia, was crowned Miss California USA 2016 on Saturday at the Terrace Theater.
“When you see your child do it and accomplish something like this, there’s just no better feeling in the world. I am so proud of her,” said Gerardo Mejia, the pastor of House of Grace church in downtown Ashland who is perhaps best known for his family’s “Suave Says” show on VH-1, as well as his hit song Rico Suave.
“She may be Miss California now, but she’s still my goofy little girl and she’s coming home for Christmas,” Mejia added.
The proud father said he definitely plans to be there in person to support his daughter when she moves on to compete in the Miss USA pageant in April.
Mejia herself said the pageant win was practically impossible to describe. Her mother, Kathy, was Miss West Virginia in 1989, she said, adding the Miss USA pageant “has always been something I wanted to accomplish.”
After five years of competitions in California (three years as a teen and two as a Miss), Mejia said Saturday’s closing moments were difficult to describe.
“Standing there in the top five ... was the furthest I’d ever made it. To be there in the final two is unfathomable,” she said with a chuckle. “Hearing my name was the most incredible feeling! It’s the biggest adrenaline rush!”
Mejia credits God for her pageant success and is quick to say she will be joining her dad for worship services at House of Grace in Ashland when she arrives here later this month.
Mejia will now represent California at the 2016 Miss USA pageant, where she hopes to be crowned by the reigning Miss USA Olivia Jordan from Oklahoma. She had previously competed for the title of Miss California Teen USA in 2014 representing Los Angeles.
