Miss Cayman Islands in bikini debut at Miss Universe
(CNS): Cayman’s Tonie Chisholm is already going through her pageant paces in Las Vegas as the Miss Universe beauty contest gets underway ahead of the televised final, which is scheduled for 20 December, the night after the rival Miss World pageant. There will be 81 women competing for the Miss Universe crown, currently held by Paulina Vega from Colombia.
Chisholm and the other contestants will be fitted, photographed and interviewed over the next two weeks as they vie to make that final. While the Miss World contest has dropped the bikini round, Miss Universe is maintaining the tradition and released the pictures this weekend.
In China at the Miss World contest, Miss Canada has been barred from competing after she did not receive a visa from the Chinese authorities and Miss Greece has been sent home for allegedly misbehaving.
So far, there have been no contestant controversies surrounding the Miss Universe pageant created by Donald Trump, who is creating enough of his own in his run for the US presidency. However, earlier this year Chisholm was sent a “disciplinary” letter by the Miss Cayman Islands committee and was given extra coaching to ensure she didn’t misbehave further.
The early favourites for the crown include competitors from Colombia, India, Indonesia, Vietnam, Sweden, France, Philippines, Thailand, and the Dominican Republic. Miss Australia, a former refuge from the conflict in Bosnia, is also tipped for the final, despite plans to wear a pastiche outfit of Dame Edna for the national costume round.
