Jasmine Herrera has that certain spark that wins beauty pageants.
The 21-year-old Guelph dental assistant recently had a good showing at the Miss Earth Canada pageant in Montreal, being named Miss Earth Ontario, and placing in the top five overall.
It’s been three years since Herrera, whose parents are from Honduras, competed in her last pageant. As Miss Teen Wellington Country, she vied for the national Miss Teen Canada title when she was 17.
Miss Earth Canada happened on Aug. 18. The annual event has an environmental awareness focus. The event tries to shed light on human activity that is detrimental to the environment, and what can be done to preserve the planet.
“I felt that I needed some motivation,” said the effervescent Herrera, speaking of why she got back into the pageant game after a three-year absence.
“I took time off after the Miss Teen Canada pageant,” she continued. “During that three-year break I was in school and working, more focused on my dental assistant career. I just felt like I needed to do something for myself, and needed something else to focus on other than just work – focus on more me time.”
Her friend Tatiana Maranhao, who Herrera met three years ago during the Miss Teen Canada pageant, won Miss Earth Canada in 2015. It was through her encouragement that Herrera got back into pageantry.
“She really encouraged me to go for it, and was my inspiration to get back into pageants,” she said.
Herrera said she was surprised by her showing at Miss Earth Canada, given that many of the contestants had international competition experience. She wasn’t nervous during the competition, only excited. She had a massive amount of fun.
“There were a lot of taller girls than me,” she said. “I’m only about five foot four, and height makes a big difference. Even with my six-inch heels on I was still one of the shorter girls there.”
She made up for the height issue by concentrating on doing exceptionally well in the interview process, she said. Her smile, and the fact she is well-spoken, helped her get the judge’s attention.
“And I just made sure that I stood out to the judges,” she said. “Whenever I was on stage I would make sure to get really good eye contact with each of the judges, and make sure they saw me and remembered me. I think that was one of the biggest things that really helped me.”
Herrera’s parents are from El Salvador. Her father came to Canada 25 years ago, and has worked at automotive parts manufacturer Linamar Corp. since coming her. Her mother works for Guelph builder Reid’s Heritage Homes.
